“A cute hotel in the middle of a light commercial area”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 December 2009

We stayed at Demeure des Brousses for one night in October 2009. The route to the hotel seems a bit odd - it's on the outskirts of the town and light commercial businesses have intruded on this hotel 's country space. Then you drive through the entrance to find a typical french country hotel with its own grounds.

Our room was individually decorated, good size with a small balcony. The bed was large queen size and very comfortable. We found the staff helpful and very friendly. Breakfast was not special, but adequate and typical of small French hotel breakfasts.

This is a comfortable little hotel in a peaceful setting and within easy reach of Montpellier.

There's a restaurant in the same grounds as the hotel - quite expensive and the worst service we experienced in all of France. Although the food was good, we could not recommend the restaurant.

“Fine - if you like a 60s ramshackle hotels close to Ikea”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 September 2009

I stayed here for one night in September. What can I say - to be fair, if you have kids and want to be really close to an aquarium / planetarium / cinema, with lots of chain restaurants (Garfunkels etc) and don't mind about location, then it would be fine. If you are looking for refinement and quality then look elsewhere. The hotel is an old French house which was once in the country but is now part of a out-of-town development. To get to it you have to drive round the Ikea car park and then up a small lane. It is not a good introduction late in the afternoon. To be fair, the hotel is only a 4 minute walk to the end of a tram line which runs every 15 mins into the centre (takes 15 minutes) and runs late into the night. And to be fair, the owners are charming and tried their very best. But they need to modernise the hotel (it proudly says it was renovated in the 60s, but has not been touched since) and to market it to families who want to be really close to a themed out-of-town complex.

“Delightful stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 August 2009

Tried to book in Arles or Nimes..they were full so we did the next best thing & stayed close by. Glad we did. People couldn't have been nicer at Demeure Des Brousses. Room was large with high ceiling. Very quiet the weekend we stayed. Staff were very accomodating for breakfast. It wasn't completely clear on various booking sites but all rooms are air conditioned (that worked well).
Tram made getting around town easy. Yes, nearby construction but that didn't bother us in the least. When we drove out to that area, very glad that signs for the hotel were posted. Montpelier is a fun place. Not aware that there is a Festival (Estival) every Friday night in the summer in the old center of the city, we just stumbled upon it. Kind of like a "Taste of Montpelier".We'd go back to that hotel and city in a minute.

“One night stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 July 2008

The drive to this hotel seems industrial with construction underway, but once inside the walls; there is a sense of a rural setting. The rooms are spacious and have original decor from a few decades earlier. Everything worked and the air conditioning functioned OK. The grounds are nice, but could use some landscaping care. A suggestion - when parking your car in front of the hotel, try to park nose out; as leaving may be difficult if you have to back out. The location is near the tramway into central Montpellier and this is the way to go into town.
The staff was most helpful and went out of their way to make the stay as pleasant as possible. Knowing that they care about the hotel and will read this review, I would suggest that they upgrade the beer and wine selections. Otherwise, I would suggest bringing your own. Breakfast was OK and the only way to go, short of longish drive.
The restaurant adjacent to the property with the same name is not associated with the hotel. It has a good reputation and a beautiful outdoor dining area, but our experience was not enjoyable, from poor service to so-so food. It may be that they just had an off night and the convenience of a nice restaurant next to the hotel was very compelling

“Might be good”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 June 2008

High on restored 'quaint' but otherwise rather lacking. Such a pity as everyone including the staff wanted it to be good. Breakfast was OK but supervised by someone aggressively wiping down earlier tables (at 9am - in southern France) so forget being able to talk. Jangling of keys by housekeeper precluded sleeping later unless equipped with earplugs. Building works on adjacent land started at 7. Restaurant adjacent looked high quality but was lunatically priced for a straight need-to-be-there visit and the more sensible midday pricing reflects that no-one will be there because it is out of town and out of attractions area (unless you want the aquarium and the cinema complex). Take the room. Go out for breakfast at the nearby shopping centre (dir. Lattes) or do without and head for lunch.

  • Liked — 'French' atmosphere of restored bedrooms
  • Disliked — lack of privacy
