“Comfortably retro, good location”

Collioure is a lovely village with spectacular views, seaside charm and amazing layers of history. Hotel Madeloc was a great place to stay - just a short walk to the restaurants, beach, castle/fort and town center. The interior of the hotel is charmingly retro, modernized but retaining its original sixties decor at the same time. The staff was warm and welcoming, rooms were clean, facilities were simple but comfortable, and the continental breakfast was good. Only drawback is that they do not have an elevator, and being that most of their rooms are located on upper floors (we were on the fourth), managing luggage up the stairways was a bit challenging (for us and for our very helpful front desk clerk who helped haul one of our bags up). Other than that, the place was perfect.

“Nice but not remarkable”

My husband and I stayed in Hotel Madeloc at the beginning of September. Our room was definately small but the terrace was the same size as the room so put together there was a lot of space (we had paid for a superior room, I am glad we did as the standard rooms seemed to have little or not outside space). The terrace faced west so was a great spot of pre dinner drinks, watching the sun go down. The bed was big and clean and no real issues with anything else. Breakfast was good and varied. From a location point of view it is a bit out of town but that made it nice and quiet. It is a definate advantage to have parking at the hotel (even though we had This is a nice, clean and cosy hotel and did not see any other hotels in Collioure which I wished we had chosen instead of this one.

“A Steep Clime”

The hotel Madeloc is located about 8-10 mins walk (uphill) from the old town of Collioure. Our"superior" room was located on the third floor, there are no lifts, hauling the bags up in the heat was exhausting as the stairs are unusually steep. the room itself was very clean, but a tight squeeze with a small terrace. The views of the Pyrenees are lovely. While the Hotel staff were helpful and friendly I found the Hotel itself to be a very basic standard (None of the glamour of their website was obvious). The breakfast was basic self service continental with mean portions on display, this cost 11 euros extra per person, it should be included in the basic price or upgraded. The car parking is also extra at 8 euro per day. The final bill worked out as expensive as a four star hotel without the facilities or luxury.

“Very disappointing - Overpriced, tired and pool area rubbish”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 July 2010

At 150 euros for a standard room it is massively overpriced - the room was small, furniture chipped and getting quite shabby, door handle loose, but on the plus side the room was clean. Terrace/balcony is tiny and looks straight onto the road and directly into houses and apartments opposite. The biggest disappointment is the pool area - really tired and the top area, the only area with enough room to sunbathe and where the sunbeds are, is very narrow with two rows of very old tatty sunbeds facing one another and large ants everywhere - just not somewhere you would like to sit. .
We had booked for 3 nights but stayed for one only: to be fair reception were reasonable in not trying to hold us to the full cost of the 3 days.
Collioure is lovely so this place was a real let-down.
Be careful of all the extra charges on top of the already hefty rates - 8 euros a day to park, 2 euros for a towel for the pool, 11euros each for breakfast, etc. etc.
Reading some of the other reviews maybe the superior rooms are better as some have their own bit of terrace and sunbeds and were only 5 euros more (all booked up) but avoid the standard rooms at all costs

“Friendly staff but hotel nothing special”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 July 2010

The hotel website implies this to be a bigger, more exclusive hotel than it is. It is in fact quite small, with spiral staircases which make getting cases to rooms hard work. One case was carried up for us on arrival (my husband had to lug his own), but there was no-one around to help when we checked out. The hotel is in a residential area of town, but the walk to the centre is easy and the surroundings are peaceful. We were dispappointed that there was no real public areas to sit with a drink in the hotel, apart from the small entrance area. Our room was a superior double but was small, although there was a large balcony. There was a swimming pool area with longers etc but all the seats were taken when we tried to use this facility. The staff were very helpful indeed re. places to visit, directions etc. The hotel also charged 8 euros per day to park at the front of the building or across the road (not an actual car park). Breakfast was 11 euros and quite a sparse buffet. This could be taken indoors or on a small terrace area, but on the second morning there were ants running all over the table and chairs outside. I think we were just a bit dispappointed as were expecting something a bit more special, with the hotel being listed as number one on this website, but there was nothing horrendously wrong with it.
