"How delightful," we thought, "to stay right in the medieval Cite of Carcassonne." Our welcome at the inn was warm and we were installed in a nice room with a view of St. Nazaire Basilica. It was 5pm so out we went to explore "Les Lices". After a meal of the tasty but ubiquitous cassoulet, we returned to discover that our room not only took in the basilica but also la Taverne du Chateau, part of the inn and in its backyard, blaring a strange kind of music that might be described as Johnny Hallyday meets Techno. But we were tired, having traveled more than 12 hours to arrive at Carcassonne, so sleep thankfully came easily.
11pm and out to the world until loud banging began on our door. We decided to ignore it but 15 minutes later, the banging started again. Answering the door, payment for the room was demanded! Of course, we had provided credit card details at the time of booking but in order to be allowed to go back to sleep, the credit card was handed over and we waited for the receipt.
The next morning, we went out early to explore the ramparts and castle. Upon our return to the inn, we and an exasperated wine delivery man found the front door locked. No one was there. A young couple who were also guests at the inn knew the entry code and let us all in. We had an interesting discussion on regional wine with the delivery man and checked out as soon as someone showed up.
