We stayed at Inter-Hotel les Oliviers for 1 night in august 2011. We came to Carcassonne to visit the medieval city and had chosen this hotel for its location (about 5 minutes on foot to the main entrance to the UNESCO world heritage site). The hotel is located about 20 minutes walk from the railway station and the city center. There is a bus stop near the hotel, but the buses seem to pass about once every hour at peak times. Taxi recommended for people arriving by train with lots of luggage. There is a little tourist information office close to the railway station were one can pick up a map. The hotel was clean, the kitchen (note: extra fee 15 euros to use the kitchen) adequately equipped. If you're planning to use the kitchen, bring washing-up liquid and brush. The room had a comfortable double bed and a bunk bed. A bonus was that the reception didn't close during midday (quite common among Carcassonne hotels). In the reception, there was also a small shop which sold guide books etc cheaper than in the medieval city. The hotel had a swimming pool which we didn't use, it looked clean and was surrounded by a sun deck. There was also a big parking reserved for the hotel guest, very handy for those arriving by car as there are lots of drivers looking for somewhere to park near the medieval city. Near the hotel there was a bakery (nice) and a newspaper shop where you could by water (cheaper than at the hotel). The only thing we didn't like about the hotel was the fact that, when booking, the check in time was set at 14.00 and check out at 12.00. When we arrived, we were told that we couldn't have the room until 15.00 and that check out was at 11.30. This was not a major problem as we could leave our luggage at the hotel and take a walk while waiting. All in all, we were satisfied with the hotel. Very good for a 2-star hotel, it more than lived up to our expectations.
Tips about the medieval city: visit the city itself in the morning (as early as you can): less crowded and less hot. The castle and rampart can be visited at any time, though obviously best done in the morning or late afternoon. The ex-cathedral closes for lunch, to be taken into account if you're planning to visit it. The guided visits of the castle&ramparts are in french only. We took the shorter one (45 min) and the longer one (1h 30 min). Both were very informative and the guides knew much about the place, but if you don't speak french, you're better off with the audio guide.
