“Lumpy pillows and hard bed, but hotel is close to the castle”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 September 2007

Rated as a three star hotel you have to expect the basics are good. Pillows are lumpy and the bed hard. Walls paper thin so we listened to a disappointed pommy rugby fan sing " sweet chariots" all night. Location close to the Carcassonne castle is great as we were able to wander around the castle at night and enjoy dinner and a drink.

  • Liked — It had a balcony and sliding door so we could let some fresh air in.
  • Disliked — small bed, hard pillows, smelt of a heavy smoke

“Average hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 June 2007

April 2007 we arrived in Carcassonne Sunday evening because we had an early flight Monday morning and had travelled up from the south. Decided to try Hotel Aragon for a vacancy because of its location and outside appearance was good. Got two family rooms no problem. Room decor was dated and smell was not great. One room had no bath plug and when we asked for one were just told sorry but have none. Staff tried to be helpful although when we asked for baby bottle to be heated they had no microwave for us to use so they sat it into a kettle which would not boil. We were told it only works sometimes!! Room cost about €80 (I think) overall ok to put your head down but definetly not great place if you have children with you.

“Excellent location, but not a 3 star”

Booked this hotel two days in advance of arriving in Carcassone due to the Best Western cancelling our room. We were lucky to get the "bon weekend en ville" 2 nights for the price of 1 promotion in such short notice and were generally happy with the hotel. The best thing was the location. Absolutely ideal to walk for a minute to get to the Cite. The view of the cite walls from the bed of room 10 was also a plus. However, the room was a lot more basic that we would expect for a 3 star hotel, especially for 120 euros a night (thankfully we only paid 138 euros for 2 nights with breakfast included). We found the staff to be friendly and contrary to one other reviewer, we did have a bottle opener in the room. As stated previously, this hotel would be ok for a couple of nights, there is defintely not enough storage for long periods of time and it was a bit strange to have the air conditioning/heating of the room controlled by reception...

“Great Location, Average Hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 October 2006

The Hotel Aragon enjoys a great location, just a short walk up the hill to the main entrance to the Cite. The hotel staff were friendly & helpful but the rooms were nothing special. However everything was clean, tidy & comfortable.
Breakfast was €9 per person & consisted of a standard continental breakfast, which made it a little pricey.
There is no bar facility in the hotel, but there is a mini bar in each room. Unfortunately there was no bottle opener to open the bottled beers & water in the mini bar!
If you are only staying a couple of nights this hotel is fine. Anything longer look for something in the Cite, the Best Western Le Donjon Hotel looked good for about the same price & had a bar & restaurant.

  • Liked — Close proxinity to the Cite
  • Disliked — Pool area in need of mdernisation. No bar or restaurant.
  • Tips/Secrets — OK for visiting the Cite on a short stay.

“Great situation, not so great hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 September 2006

This hotel was not our first choice for our 20th wedding anniversary trip because most of the other hotels within our budget were fully booked.
The situation of the hotel cannot be faulted. Right next to La Cite and only a short 10 minute walk from the Centre Ville (La Bastide) It was also right next door to the hotel we originally reserved, which was a bit galling. Unfortunately the hotel itself did not live up to our expectations. The whole ambience of the place is very dark and gloomy. Our room was very small with no space to store our suitcases and the only small drawers were in the desk and bedside tables. The handle on the toilet door was broken off and the piece that was left was quite dangerous to use, however the bathroom itself was spotless and everything worked well. You have to ask at the reception to have your air conditioning left on or they automatically switch it off during the day. The staff were pleasant and very helpful.
Breakfast is not included in the room rate and we thought it was too expensive (9 Euros each) so we just walked into town and bought croissants and sat outside a cafe, so much nicer (and cheaper).
We stayed in this hotel for 4 nights and one of our biggest gripes was that we could not get a cup of coffee or tea in the hotel after 6pm; we had to go to the hotel bar across the street. This hotel would be more suitable for an overnight stay where all you need from the hotel is a bed for the night (the bed was actually very comfortable)
2 tips for a visit to La Cite: first, go early on Sunday morning (before 9am if possible) it's so quiet and peaceful; and second, don't eat there because it's overpriced, poor quality and very busy. There are plenty of better restaurants across the river.
