When I was looking for a hotel halfway between Barcelona and Nice, I was at first struck by the paucity of 'interesting' choices. So I decided to try Aigues Mortes, which I loved as a place, but had only previously visited for lunch. The Mazarin seemed to be a secret, but sounded OK, so I took a chance.
It's down a very narrow lane (they all are in Aigues Mortes), and unloading the luggage was a bit of a trial. But inside it was a treat. Wonderful stone staircases, and huge, bright room, overlooking the garden, and a tiny restaurant decorated in a style that even Elton John might find a tad over-baroque.
On further enquiry, we found out that until recently it had been a 'gay-only' hotel, which explained the architectural taste and squeaky-cleanliness.
There's a large undercover pool (and a 'dark room' in the cellar...harrumph), and a green garden shaded by immense plane-trees.
The staff, once they accept that you're heterosexual, are charming and helpful, and breakfast is desultory but willing. We didn't eat in the hotel (there are too many other choices in town), but the menu looked good. There's a nice Indian restaurant just around the corner...or there was...I can't see chicken Vindaloo catching on in deepest France.
Parking is a bugger but available (and you need it in A.M), and I'd recommend driving a small car....not an immense gas-guzzler like mine.
To sum up, I can't wait to go back. My Find of The Year.
