“nice (expensive) hotel but unpleasant owner and staff”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 January 2011

we called at 530 pm on a friday in January, and asked for a room with one bed, the hotel was empty, when we asked if he could give us a reduced price (his price was 104€ without breakfast which is not a cheap rate by any stretch of the imagination and this was the slowest week of the year - right after new year) he was unpleasant and spoke to us like we were beggars, finally my husband suggested to include breakfast (otherwise 12€/p for french breakfast) and he reluctantly agreed. He then brought us to a room with 2 single beds (remember the hotel was empty) and when we mentionned we wanted one bed hereluctantly agreed to a room with one big bed. Then when I asked where I could park he sent us out of the city, we later found out that in winter you can park anywhere right next to the hotel, but he didn't help with bags and decided that it would amuse him to have us carry everything through the streets... truly unpleasant.
The hotel room was nice, clean, small bed but nice sheets and warm and well heated, with an ok bathroom. Generally the hotel would be high on my list of places to stay but the owner is soooo unpleasant and the staff we met in the morning is just the same that I would recommend to stay elswhere and spend the money at some of the brilliant restaurants in Aiguesmortes. I should point out, I am French from the area and speak with local accent so I never expect the best but know when the person is being rude beyond what is acceptable.
I heard there is a nice friendly hotel "les templiers" and would recommend to try that one rather than les arcades and Mr Mean.
We did not eat in his restaurant even though recommended by Michelin because we were worried he would spit in our food and did not want to give him our business. We went to bar a vin where the staff were very nice the food remarquable (especially the petite bouilleabaisse, the seiches were average) and the wine very good with an unusal selection to choose from.

“A great find”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 July 2010

We found this room in Frommer's under restaurants. There are a few rooms above and ours was very pretty. It had a high-beamed ceiling, large bed, lots of storage and looked out over this charming walled village. You get a card so you can park for nothing as there is no parking inside the walls. Our hostess even did our laundry for free. We didn't eat at the restaurant because it wasn't open either of the two nights we were there (Sunday and Monday) but Frommer's says it's the best dining experience in town.

“Charming,quirky hotel with good restaurant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 June 2009

This was our second stay at Les Arcades and we were happy to return. It's fast becoming our place in the Camargue and after a less than thrilling experience the previous night it was great to reach Les Arcades.
The hotel is in a lovely position inside the walled town of Aigues Mortes. It is very close to the main square and the surrounding shops and restaurants. There is no parking at the hotel but they will give you a pass to park in the public car parks outside the walls for free.
The building is old and charming. It's age does lend it a certain quirkiness when it comes to the layout of the corridors to the rooms and there is no lift or obvious Reception area. However, once staff are located, the rooms you are led to are large, clean and reasonably well equipped with flat screen TV and air conditioning. The day staff speak little English but are willing and do appreciate you trying to speak French, however limited that may be!
The hotel also has a sun terrace on the first floor with a small secluded splash pool which is unexpected but pleasant.
Breakfast is included if you are happy with bread and croissants, extra charges for cooked items.
The restaurant is very good and a favourite with locals as well as guests. The menus deliver good choices and not too outrageous prices. The Foie Gras with Ginger and the Lobster Ravioli stand out as particularly memorable. My husband dreams about the cheese trolley. Be warned though, the desserts are enormous!
The restaurants staff's English is also much better than my French.

I wouldn't recommend Les Arcades for families as it's compact and quirky but for couples looking for an authentic experience this could well fit the bill.

“Death by Mattress!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2008

Our few days spent in the Camargue would have been great if it had not been for an almost total lack of sleep! Unfortunately our first two hotel choices (on Trip Advisor) were closed - we should have waited until they reopened! The Hotel Arcades' terrible mattress was one thing but also we suffered from street noise including the daily refuse collection at 5.30am. Earplugs didn't even help! Single glazing, hence the noise from drunken pedestrians, motorbikes, cars and dogs! Impossible to sleep soundly on that ancient mattress which seemed older than the town ramparts - the bed and bathroom both need urgent renovation. We came across the couldn't care less attitude (mentioned by another traveller) from at least two members of staff (or the owners?) - poor welcome and response to a simple request. A smile costs nothing. A real shame as it would not take much to change things for the better - if they really wanted to...

“Remember that it's the staff's summer holiday too!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 September 2007

The trouble with taking a summer holiday in August in France is that it's the French summer holiday too. Not that we saw any evidence of crowded resorts or noisy guests.

No. It was just that there seemed to be a single, preoccupied, possibly harassed, lady running the whole of the Hotel Les Arcades.

Outside on the streets of Aigues-Mortes, some sort of colourful, raucous Medieval festival was taking place (the nature or origins of which I have yet to discover for we arrived in the early evening without prior knowledge!).

The lady running the hotel (who had the distinct and unnerving look of an unapologetic stand-in) seemed to have preferred to be out carousing and jousting with her fellow knaves rather than dealing with a couple of dusty English tourists who just rolled in sweating from a hot day's crusade through the Camargue.

Which was fair enough, I suppose, but we did feel distinctly unwelcome.

Continental breakfast - included in the price - was rather insubstantial (a very English understatement, my girlfriend would say). It was served single-handedly by our same lady again, perhaps grumpy this time from the hangover of a streetparty joined too late.

  • Liked — Excellent location, but then anywhere is excellent in a small, essentially pedestrianised walled town
  • Disliked — Strong ethic of the unready and unwilling
