We spent a day in Versailles, with trains (get the train to Versailles RG), first queueing (yes pre-buying utickets would have helped, but only to eliminate one queue....and we aren't great fans of guided tours) then finally getting in.

As an aside or original plan was to go to Versailles then Chartres, that wouldn't have worked.

Whist it is opulant and beautiful, the crowds of people impacted, at least in our view, the enjoyment and value. People pushing to see areas in rooms etc.. My wife, more one for courtesy than pushing ended up giving up and just staying back in rooms.

The gardens were better, and fabulous, with more space for people to spread.

Would we recommend this, I'm not sure, if you struggle with crowds in small spaces then perhaps no. In the end it was a disappointment for us.

I like to visit the old palaces in Europe, so when I visit Paris My friends & I decided to Visit Versallies, So we went there by underground. It was very nice! I like the decoration of the building also the gardens were so pretty but inside the palace it was very crowded I didn't see the furnitures I only saw the art in the roof!!

I wish they can organise the enteranse for the visitors to let them see this Huge Art!

We visited Chateau Versailles on a Sunday morning in September and after reading all the horror stories about how busy it is, we were pleasantly surprised. There were a huge number of people there, but the line for the palace was only about 20-30 minutes long and the palace was not nearly as crowded as described in previous reviews. Make sure to pick up the audio guide as it is included in the price of your ticket. The gardens are gorgeous and definitely worth exploring and taking many pictures.

We walked to the Grand Trianon and Petit Trianon and the walk was not too long and very enjoyable. Those houses are both worth seeing but if you have limited time just seeing the Palace and gardens would be sufficient I think.

Plan to spend at least a half day and possibly a whole day at Chateau Versailles. We bought our tickets online in advance so we could enter the line to the Palace right away which saved some time.

We recently did the Versailles Palace and Garden Tour with a company called My Louvretour which also offers tours of the Louvre. The tour was wonderful and I would recommend it. We were very fortunate that day to have only two other people in our group so our group consisted of only 4 people. It was like having a private tour guide. Since our group was so small, our tour guide was able to talk one of the garden workers into letting us view a private area that most groups do not see. Even if you don't have a small group like we had, you will still enjoy this tour. The meeting place was also very convenient as we met in front of the Musee d'Orsay for our afternoon tour and in the morning we toured the museum on our own and were right there.

We also did the Louvre tour with this company which was also very good. Would recommend both tours.
