My husband and I stayed here for four nights over the New Year holiday 2009/2010. We chose the Perdrix Rouge because of its location within walking distance of the apartment of some American friends who had moved to Paris earlier in 2009. The price was a consideration as well. We paid 95 Euro per night, plus 7 Euro each for breakfast if we wanted it.
The 20th is not a fashionable, touristy or expensive quarter, but the Hotel is just steps from the Jourdain Metro station so only 6 stops from Rambuteau (Pompidou Centre), 7 from the Hotel de Ville station and 8 from Chatelet/Les Halles, which is the Metro and RER hub of Paris.
One of the best things about the Hotel was the friendliness, efficiency and good humour of the employees. Most spoke at least a little English, so everything worked out with our little French, and there was always someone available if we needed any assistance, which was not often.
We did not venture into the lift as it was even smaller than other reviewers have described, but made the trip to our room on the 3rd floor by the rather dodgy (circular) staircase. Room #36 overlooked the church and the square/intersection below, so there was always something to look at. It was small room, with standard double bed, little bedside tables, on wall bedside lights, desk with chair and luggage rack. Don't bring a cat, as you wouldn't be able to swing it. We found the bed reasonably comfortable and warm, although another couple we knew staying there had aching backs each morning. Two pillows on the bed and a third with an extra blanket (not needed)in the small closet.
We had a shower rather than bath, which I understand are only half baths. Again, very small separate bathroom with folding glass shower screen (no soap holder or shelf), basin and toilet. Two hand and bath towels, which were not new or luxurious, but did the job and were changed every day. Sachets of soap and also shampoo, updated daily, were the only amenities. Everything was very clean.
Breakfast served from 7:00 am until 10:00 am if you required it, and was reasonable in scope. Fresh coffee and hot milk, water for tea, two types of juice in jugs, yoghurt (plain or fruit), bread and croissants with confiture or marmalade, boiled eggs, ham and cheese. Not bad for the price, even if the little room off the lobby wasn't very swanky.
I used the free wi-fi and there was a little laptop in the reseption area for the use of guests.
We will definitely stay here again when in Paris. The neighbourhood is a real part of the city, complete with the bums outside the church and the wonderful patisserie up the street (always a line outside). Lots of places to eat and drink, as well as good food shops and a supermarket. The bar run by a Moroccan across the street from the supermarket is a real find. I could see that having windows open in the summer might be a problem, as the bar scene downstairs can be a bit rowdy, but I guess that's what ear plugs are for.
