I stayed at the Hotel Thoumieux in May 2012 and thoroughly enjoyed this boutique hotel located in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower. The location is tough to beat for, upon leaving the hotel, turn left and you ill see the Eiffel Tower - just a ten minute walk away. Turn right and Napoleon's Tomb and the Hotel des Invalides is a 5 minute walk. The champs elysee is only a 5 min car ride. The left bank is only two to three tube stops away. The location - in two words - 'almost perfect'.
The hotel and its fabulous restaurant (and downstairs brasserie) are great.I was lucky enough to have to wait for an hour as my room was finalized as that afforded me the opportunity to have a late lunch in the brasserie downstairs. ("lucky to wait", you ask? Well, of course. For without the wait, i would probably have not had the time to try the wonderful food made famous under the restaurant's kitchen) The food and service was top notch and as some of the guide books note, I may have had lunch near new president elect Hollande...or at least some of his compatriots.
As for the rooms - they come with complimentary soda, water and drinks in a nice equipped fridge along with an espresso machine (along with a gift tray of splendid cookies upon your arrival). The decor is tres splendide, with a large and gorgeous restroom of marble, a powerful shower and comfortable large bed. A great touch is the wonderful his/her terry robes. All in all, I had a normal sized room (not a suite) and it was a good size. Having travelled to Paris on numerous occasions and stayed in various hotels, this room was definitely on the 'larger' side.. For the price it could not be beat.
Now, if you are expecting to be greeted by a hotel receptionist or valet, get ready for a nice surprise because this is a truly French boutique hotel - not a Westin or Hilton. Not that I mind.I booked a boutique expecting to speak French and try my best to accommodate my hosts with my rudimentary level of the 'language of love'. They appreciated my efforts and, with veiled smiles, always entertained my pathetic attempts to harness an adult conversation. When communication had all but broken down, they would speak English and my wake up time or question would be eagerly answered. I very much enjoyed this aspect of my visit as its not every day one gets to practice their french in Scottsdale, Arizona. Lol.
(Of course, if you don't have much patience with the well attired and 'hip' French staff and their limited language skills, this hotel may not be for you)
That being said, if you have an ounce of patience, enjoy a truly French experience, an unreal location and a room that rates well above many in this City (especially for the price range) then the Hotel Thoumieux is definitely for you. An excellent choice.
