“Convenient Hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2012

We got to Paris after Christmas, and we stayed at the Saint Louis Bastille for 3 days. Its a very informal hotel, but need and cozy rooms. Breakfast was simple, with pastries and baguettes. The reception hosts were helpful, and they even booked a shuttle for us, which was very handy as it was rainy. The hotel is very close to the Oberkampf Metro, as well as the main bus line going into the centre of Paris. Very convenient.

“Clean and nice, service could have been better”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 November 2011

We got a room on the 5th floor, no street noise at all and clean and tidy room/bathroom. The mattress was really firm/hard, but that was pretty much the only bad thing about the room. Avoid, though, if you like a very soft bed.

Location is okay, between the Place Bastille and Republique, close to the metro and easy to get to and from. We walked to the Seine, a 20-25 minute walk. Didn't expect prime location and prime service when it's this cheap (Paris standards) but all in all we enjoyed the stay.

Negative: Guy at reception was all over the place, so we waited for out room key on several occations. Not ok!

“Our stay could have been so much better”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 October 2011

When using Tripadvisor I like to take all reviews with a grain of salt but in this case I wish I would have paid more attention to the negative reviews. On arrival we were given a room on the third floor in the back which I thought would be great, not so. The lift can hold two people that's it, good luck with the luggage. You are on your own! Most times we used the stairs. Check-in staff couldn't be bothered.Girl that checked us in was not forthcoming with anything. We expect to be informed of things like, check-out time, breakfast hours(since we paid for it) internet code, even found out the hard way from the night manager that we were supposed to leave our key when we left the building! The room: I'm not sure when it was last cleaned. Hair on floor and blanket, shower was moldy and really gross, pillows were the worst, I mean old and lumpy, bedspread was stained. The lift made racket all night as well as other patrons who slammed doors all night long. We got very little sleep the four nights we were there, which is not the way we wanted to start our days. Freshly painted and the air worked well.
Staff was not helpful at all. Not sure if limited English or just their way of not having to help us. When we asked about local restaurants all they could say was the place on the corner(Gaston, which we ate at but no big deal) usually hotels and restaurants work together in a neighborhood, really strange. We found a few on our own.I had emailed the hotel prior to our arrival asking about a self-serve laundry near by. Never received a answer!
Breakfast room was nice, Mediocre food the same each day. Too tired to care!
Close to metro stop but on the fringe of things. Area could be a little dicey at night.
Lesson learned: pay attention to reviews. We were on a pre-paid reservation otherwise we would have left.

Room Tip: Go somewhere else!

“Mold and bugs in bathroom”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 September 2011
2
people found this review helpful

I was very disappointed when we settled in our room...I went into the bathroom, turned on the lights to find bugs scattering into the shadows. Not cool! The tissue paper holder didn't have any tissues and there was black mold growing in the crevice of the tub, and mildew in the tiles of the shower...gross! The beds were so uncomfortable and it was so noisy outside! I had ear plugs in and I still couldn't sleep. Breakfast was mediocre and staff seemed to be preoccupied on the computer. Do yourself a favor and book a different hotel!

“Lovely French boutique hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 September 2011

Just returned from France and our stay at the St. Louis Bastille Hotel. Lovely room and bathroom. Clean towels and beds made every day. Tea and cookies in room. We were on the first floor in the back. No problem with noise at all. One night people above us seemed to be moving furniture but thats not a hotel problem. Very small elevator. Not much room for more than 2 people at a time but it worked. Breakfast was wonderful. Corinne there was so friendly and did a great job of making us feel welcome. All front desk staff were more than happy to help us with maps or bus routes or making arrangements for tours or cabs. Most spoke good English so had no real problem with that. Breakfast room is darling stone walls, very cozy. Selection of cereals, yogurt, breads and pain du chocolat, jams and fruit, cheese etc. Close to bus, about a one and a half block walk and also to metro line. Literally right outside the front door was a lovely farmers market on Tuesday. Beautiful fruits and vegetables, shoes, clothes, jewelry, great for shopping from local people. Would stay there again if i get the chance to go back.
