“Loved this hotel for years”

I have been staying at this hotel on every trip to Paris for 20 years. I wouldn't consider staying anywhere else in Paris. The location could not be better. It is reasonably priced. It's like a typical pension you would find anywhere in Europe. Yes some updating would be nice but it is clean and i've never had a bad stay. I've probably stayed in all of the rooms over the years. Mr. Pierre the owner is a sweet man and will go out of his way to assist you in recommending restaurants or site seeing.
Back in my back packing days, I missed a connection through PAR on the way to Amsterdam and was stranded at midnight with no french money or reservations. With no where to go (and it wasn't safe to stay in the train station by myself all night) I showed up at this hotel and asked them if would be ok to just sit in their breakfast nook until I could get another train in the morning. Not only did he remember me and greet me warmly, he apologized for being fully booked and gave me a flat for the night in a different building across the street, he gave me breakfast, metro tickets and change to call my friend in AMS to tell her I wouldn't be arriving till the am. All of this was free. I was able to pay, he refused to accept. Whomever says the Parisians are rude never stayed here.

“Economical Accommodation”

This is a no frill hotel. Good location to metro and basic accommodation. Those travelling on a budget and don't care too much about luxury, I would recommend it. It fits in well for those travelling through a few European cities and don't want to over stretch on spending lavishly on hotels.

For those who want to splurge in the most romantic city in Europe, this is not the place for you.

“Pathetic hotel, very poor service”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 December 2009

Me and my huband stayed at this hotel for two nights. Admitedly, it was a very short stay in Paris and we were keen to be out and about for most of the time and therefore we did not want to spend much on a hotel we would not be spending much time in, but the Hotel de Roubaix was absolutely horrid. The beds were so soft that we both ended up having backache the next mornings, and although the sheets were clean, there were dubious stains on the box of the bed. The decor was absolutely atroicious, so don't expect anything in the way of luxury. And with swastikas drawn on our walls, we could immediately guess the kind of clientele that had been to the hotel before. We were also rudely awakened at 3am by the sounds of a very loud brawl outside the hotel. The bathroom, although clean, had no shower curtain so each time we took a shower, the entire bathroom would end up drenched. Towels were clearly 'taken' from other places, did not even match, and we were given a foot towel to use as a body towel as well. The staff were rude, apart from one who was very sweet but who had no knowledge of the local area meaning we ended up being over an hour late for dinner reservation dut to poor directions. We paid 89 euros per night for this hotel but in retrospect we would have preferred to spend a little more for just the basic comforts. The restaurant, if you can call it that, is acutally a room with a few tables and chairs so don't expect much from that either. I would never recommend this hotel to anyone, and cannot think of one redeeming feature at all.

“A quaint hotel in a great location.”

My children and I stayed here for three nights in Oct/09, during a school break. We are well-traveled Canadians, now living in Europe, who generally enjoy the modern comfort and amenities of North American hotels. Our rate at the Hotel de Roubaix was 98 euros per night, including the standard French continental breakfast. (The current single rate, posted on their door, is 65 euro per night, with a 6 euro supplement for breakfast.) The hotel is conveniently located 1/2 block from the Metro station, only four stops away from Gare du Nord train station. The Louvre, Notre Dame and trendy Le Marais district are just a short walk. It is on a side street, just off Sebastopol Blvd, on the border of the 2nd & 3rd Arrondissements. Don't be fooled by other reviews saying this hotel is on a "quiet" street...You won't find anywhere quiet in Paris. Although the street is not busy, you do hear all the traffic from Sebastopol. It is not a huge deal. The Hotel de Roubaix is small and quaint--think "Granny's parlor"--and feels very personal. The very small lift (max. two persons + bags) is efficient and reliable--something to be grateful for as they are a rarity in hotels of this price-point in Paris. The stairs and hallways are dimly lit. I would not say our room was "spotless"--definitely the carpets need replacing--but the bedding was very clean and fresh towels and soap were provided daily. The bathroom, though tiny, was clean and modern, with fantastic water pressure in the shower and lots of hot water. (Shower only, no tub.) Our small room had three double beds, and, although it was cramped, at least we all had our own bed! The mattresses, however, are ancient and vary from hard-as-rock to super-soft. Still, we all enjoyed a comfortable sleep. Our room had shutters on the windows, that you could open wide to get fresh air and a good view of the street below. There is no air conditioning, but as it was October, this was a non-issue for us. Summer might be a different story. Breakfast is served in the small dining room, just off the lobby. It is typically French--half a fresh baguette, butter, jam, a glass of juice and a carafe of your choice of hot beverage (hot chocolate for the kids, cafe au lait for me.) And, despite previous reviews, I found the coffee delicious. To summarize: The Hotel de Roubaix is perfectly adequate and a bargain for this area of Paris. Don't compare it to North American hotels and you won't be disappointed.

“A bit grotty but very convenient”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 August 2009

We stayed a total of 5 nights, first with our two teenage children. We stayed in 3 different rooms and in each case the beds were lumpy but had clean linen. The shower was reasonable, though didn't always provide hot water. We had a lot of luggage as we were camping later on in France so having an elevator was very helpful. Even though it is advertised as being on a quiet street, it is very close to a busy road, across from a little club, and the noise never really stops, but hey, that's what it's like to stay in the centre of Paris! We all had earplugs and we were fine. The location was perfect for walking to Notre Dame, many of the museums, good restaurants, and metro stations.
The breakfast, included in the price of the hotel, is best avoided. The coffee tasted as if it had been reheated from a previous morning and served with warmed long-life milk. We chose instead to pick up fruit and yoghurt and a croissant from the Monoprix nearby. When our daughter became ill the night before departure the manager allowed us to stay an extra 2 hours so she could rest before the taxi took us out to the airport and this was much appreciated.
