My husband and I spent two nights in Le Mathurin for the 4th time or so, as we like to use this hotel for both business and leisure trips to Paris. The interior decoration is very stylish, the lobby, various lounges, bar and breakfast room intimate, plush and cosy. The staff is friendly and attentive. We like the location: although it's just minutes from Boulevard Hausmann, the hotel is in a quiet street.
But I feel that the hotel should dare to sacrifice some of the esthetics to more down to earth practical features. We stayed in (superioir double) room 404 which is really lovely. It faces the courtyard thus guaranteeing an amazingly quiet night in the heart of Paris. Le Mathurin rooms have separate toilets which is a real plus. However, the bathrooms are tiny and leave no room for maneuver: there was only a very small alcove next to the sink to put toiletries, requiring a mikado champion's agility to pick any item without causing the entire regiment to fall over. The room itself suffers from the same disease: it has too much furniture considering the available floorspace. In addition to a small sidetable with stool, it features a small but heavy square table and dito chairs which literally block the wardrobe door. You need to remove the chair in order to open the tiny wardrobe and reach for your clothes and use its mirror. It seems also impossible for non acrobatic guests to be seated at that table at the same time. The room has book shelves with plenty of arty books at either side of the bed and opposite the bed next to the television screen, which give the room a somehow cultural and intellectual cachet, but I would have preferred to make a more practical use of that space. I would encourage the management to replace the table and chairs by one comfy club chair. Another thing which got me quite nervous was the hairdryer issue. Seeing the 30 cm long cable I knew that I was in for a real challenge. The bearded guy smiling viciously at me from the bathroom outlet left no doubt that there was no liberté and égalité but only fraternité to be found here. I then courageously searched the whole room for an outlet allowing me to blowdry my hair without having to put my head under the bed or behind the televison screen. At last I managed to lay my head in between the espresso machine and the coffee cups and got it over with. Hmmm not so comfortable after all, is it? Later that night when we decided to rest our wary (albeit blowdried) heads, it became clear that the curtain hanging before the television screen is to accommodate those guests who, unlike us, give up the battle to turn off the red signal light on the telly screen shining right into our eyes. It took us only ten minutes to make it go away! I must admit however that unpleasant memories of the movie Poltergeist came back later as we were suddenly woken up in the night by voices talking behind the flimsy curtain.
Finally I believe it is time to replace some of the matresses; they have seen better times.
All in all, I would still recommend Le Mathurin, but I would encourage management to give more weight to practicalities.
Room Tip: Rooms at the back are quiet; ask for a bigger bathroom.
