“The Blue Planet Blues”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 January 2012

This place managed by a maniac, Celine, is so overly priced when taken under consideration, she runs the place as a jail house. Years ago was operating with the same mafia in the Tourist Information Center at Ave. Champs Elisses, (closed now). Which used to send everyone, claiming it was the cheapest hostel in Paris at only 18.30 euros per night... Today at 25 euros in dormitory. While another hostel close to the Bastille it was only 13.00 euros, The Friends Hostel. The Blue Planet Hostel started with a good concept and atmosphere. Most of the clientelle lost by the abuse and the taking for granted... They make you go out for cleaning up, (11-3:30 PM), and you would only find they have folded your blanket during that period. Although it is the only time to take a warm shower since the hours of the morning are for Polar bears only. There is no lockers and the storage room is notorious for losing your stuff, such umbrellas, sleeping bags, et cetera. You are only allowed to stay 3 days total of nights and, the beds are really for children. There is only one key per room and a nightmare to coordinate with the key in and out the room. Next time in Paris I would chose sleeping in a cardboard box before returning to the Blue Planet at all. Ou la Maison Blanche for mental problems such those of the neurotic administration.

Room Tip: They are cheaper few hotels for a private room than a private in any hostel in Paris.

“Terrible”

This place was Terrible.
The stairs are the only way up to the rooms,so prepare to struggle with your luggage.
Some thing we worried about was the storage room which is not locked or supervised so any one could easily take your stuff.

The rooms have no redeeming factors. Our plugs didn't work. My friend had some of her clothes stolen.Absolutely no respect for privacy, they will just walk into your room in the morning for "cleaning".
Staff are some the rudest people I have ever met, unfriendly, not helpful.

Avoid

“Exactly what I expected from other reviews”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 September 2011

The only reason I would recommend this hostel is if you have an early train and you need somewhere to sleep for a few hours. I highly recommend locking your bags in the train station before checking in, since the stairs are narrow, steep, and the only way to get to your room. (Make sure to bring up to 10 euros in change, though, since the change machine in the locker area doesn't work and there is no intention to fix it, just fyi).

Prepared with the knowledge I had gained from reading other reviews on tripadvisor I decided to brave this hostel as I had a 6 AM train from Gare de Lyon and this was the easiest option. I tried to reserve a room by emailing them (4 times), but I'm pretty sure they ignore those if they don't think the hostel will fill (since the rate is 18 euros online and 25 in person). When I mentioned my efforts to contact the hostel to the desk clerk he suddenly decided he didn't speak English.

I paid my 25 euros (since I had brought my own sheets I didn't have to pay the additional 7 to rent some) and climbed the 5 flights of stairs to my room. I was given a 4 person co-ed room, despite being the first person in it, and when I got to the top I noticed there were only 3 beds. This was worrisome, but I was luckily paired with only 2 other girls who were quiet and crashed early, just like me. I was also pleasantly surprised to find that all 3 of us had been given keys, where I had thought I would have to wake up to let them in each time.

I knew from previous reviews that the showers had no pressure on the fifth floor, so I had no intention of showering that morning (despite the desire). This problem was confirmed by the swearing of the guy in the shower as I passed to head down the 5 flights of treacherous stairs to leave. For some reason, despite breakfast being dispensed from a vending machine, it didn't start until 7:45 AM so I was unable to partake. That's fine, as there was a lovely (and expensive) cafe in the train station itself.

All-in-all I feel lucky to have escaped the experience with so few problems, but I know this review would have been much worse had I not read tripadvisor first and come prepared, mentally and physically. Thanks other reviewers!
