“Stay away at all costs.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 October 2011

A friend and I originally had a booking at another Hipotel location, but due to a miscommunication our booking was lost and a room was found for us at the Voltaire location. Upon entry, you are presented with a nice looking corridor, complete with wall mirrors, as you make your way to the front desk. Unfortunately, that is where the redeeming features of this hotel stop. Upon walking a bit further, you are presented with a dirty, musty waiting room, consisting of 3 stained chairs and a dirty coffee table. The front desk is not much more appealing, with dirty equipment everywhere. The walk up to the room required walking up 4 flights of disgusting carpet, which looked as though it had not been cleaned in years. When we reached our floor, we were presented with a fire door, and upon opening it, we entered a white-walled cement fire corridor in which there were a few large metal doors. We swiped our card and tried to enter our room, but the door was stuck and we had to body-check the door before it would open. Inside, we were presented with a very plain, dirty, run-down room with minimal furniture. A small wooden desk, two small wooden plank night tables, heavily worn mattresses, and unmatched sheets were all that was in the room. The bathroom was absolutely disgusting. Someone had sprayed blue cleaner on the toilet seat and not cleaned it off. Everything was peeling and dirty. We actually refused to use the washroom, and we didn't shower that night. The entire building and room looked as though no renovations or upkeep of any kind had been done in 30 years. Upon seeing all of this, we went back downstairs and immediately cancelled our second night. We asked if there was another room available, but were told we were in the best room available. We stayed the night, but needed to find new accommodations for the second night and since there was no wifi in the room, we had to go downstairs and sit in the stained chairs while we searched for another hotel at last-minute notice. The hotel is also located in a terrible part of Paris. It was filthy and reminded me of west hastings street in Vancouver. Not sure there is much else to say. I recommend staying away from this hotel at all costs. The only positive note was that we did not get bed bugs.

“Totally fine - but not for a romantic weekend!”

I stayed here after reading some pretty terrible reviews on Tripadvisor...but I was in a jam and needed a place for 3 nights at the last minute.
At this price, you can't expect much for such a central location in Paris; it's ideally located in a happening area (Oberkampf is only a few blocks away), a Metro stop (Voltaire) is right outside, there's a Velib station across the street...it has a lot going for it.
Sure, this place is BASIC...but it's reasonably clean, functional and once you get over these facts you'll not be too sorry you stayed here. If you're looking for a hotel just to sleep in then it's fine - if however you are on vacation and plan on 'hanging out' at your hotel quite a bit then don't book here.
I stayed 3 nights in total and the Manager reduced the price for nights 2&3 for me without my suggesting a discount. For a so-called 'decent' hotel I would have paid for one night what I paid for three.
The lift doesn't work (it seems that this is an ongoing problem from other reviews I have read) so if you need one; don't book here. The stairwell is quite narrow also. My door key didn't work a few times - no big deal; they just remagetised it and I was back in business. Staff were pleasant enough despite my horrible French - as everywhere in Paris at least try to speak a few words when you can; it is appreciated if not always understood.
Free wi-fi in the lobby was also helpful. I didn't take breakfast here so I can't comment. There are many great cafes, brasseries and fruit stalls on the street outside. I can't say I am a fan of the place but I would totally stay here again under the same circumstances.

Room Tip: As for a room at the front of the building to get a view. At the rear for peace and quiet.

“Good value for money”

We stayed in a double room for 4 nights. It was very clean and comfortable, though basic. Nice ensuite, slightly spoilt by lack of plug in washbasin (awkward for contact lens wearers!) and no hooks or rails for towels. But room was serviced every day, with clean towels, to our pleasant surprise.
No air-con, and for rooms at the front you have to be prepared to enjoy the sounds of Paris nightlife!
Right next to metro Voltaire, and Bastille area nearby for cafes and restaurants, We had a pleasant stay.

“Nice Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 July 2011

Location is a bit far from the tourist spots but nonetheless the metro is very helpful, Voltaire station is just right in front of the hotel *route 9* which can easily bring you to Trocadero for Eiffel Tour and F.Roosevelt for Champs Elysees. McDs is right next to the hotel as well. The hotel rooms are small so as the bath and the rest, nice helpful staff. For dining, better go to Notre Dame or Champs which you can easily get a great value and good meal. I will surely recommend this hotel despite it's simplicity.

Room Tip: Spacious Rooms in good location

“Perfect price, for quaint hotel with character and charm”

I stayed here with my mum as an avid Jim Morrison fan, I wanted to be close to Pere Lachaise. I am a smoker, mum is not, so it was lovely to have a quaint wee balcony to have a sneaky cig on with a very beautiful view (will upload pics) There is a Mcdonalds downstairs open till 2am (never used it) Cause there is also 2 supermarkets across the rd, which have litre of pink wine for a euro! I would use the Voltaire station (hotel is next door) They told me Republic so that was a small hike! Ohhh just a tip fab wee clothes shop opp Pere Lachaise that have items from 1 euro upwards and if eating at night visit St Michael (notre damn) Hundreds of cafes competing so you can get a three course meal (and sometimes a glass of wine for 10 euros!
