For me, there are a couple of essential basic things one should expect ALL hotels to deliver, irrespective of their price point.
1. A comfortable bed and decent night's sleep
2. A working shower
Everything else (1000 satellite TV channels, luxury soap, fancy shaving mirrors, etc) are just unnecessary nice-to-haves in my opinion.
I know that for Paris the Residence Richemont would probably be considered a budget hotel, however this does not excuse its total failure to provide adequate service in these two basic areas.
Firstly, we booked a "King size" bed, which turned out to be two hard foam beds pushed together. When will hoteliers learn that these are not the same thing. Also, the AC did not work so it was hot an uncomfortable.
Secondly the shower was actually pretty dangerous. Once you turned the taps on the pressure of the hot and cold water would vary wildly so one minute the shower was freezing cold and the next minute it was scolding hot! Needless to say it was a very unpleasant experience. I reported the problem to the receptionist who said he'd "get a technician to look at it" but didn't even ask what room I was in (I had to volunteer the information). Needless to say it did not get fixed.
On the plus side the breakfast served in the hotel was good and the neighbourhood was quiet (although not especially pretty).
