I chose this hotel for our 5-night break as it was fairly centrally located, within easy access of a Metro station. We weren't expecting luxury - just a comfortable, clean base where we could rest our weary heads after a hectic day's sight-seeing and, as such, it was ideal. I had emailed the hotel requesting an upper floor with a city view, and got just that ... a view over the rooftops to the Eiffel Tower, and we could even glimpse Sacre Coeur in the distance. Our twin room was comfortable and clean, the beds were very firm (this didn't bother us), and the bathroom basic but spacious. Getting out of the bath proved to be a bit of an adventure ... there was quite a step down and nothing to hold on to, so clambering out of it whilst wet involved sitting on the edge, swinging legs across and hoping for the best!). It might be awkward for older guests. The hairdryer was very effective and it was a nice touch to get complimentary toiletries.
We didn't use the flatscreen TV mounted on the wall, but my daughter was grateful that there was an iPod docking station. I was disappointed to find there were no tea/coffee making facilities - had these been available I'd have been tempted to award the hotel 4 stars. We didn't have breakfast at the hotel, but instead went to the Boulangerie Gauthier across the street - delicious pastries, bread, cakes and coffee - you can perch at the bar or sit outside at one of the small pavement tables.
I can't fault the staff - always helpful, charming and polite. Check-out is at 11 am, but there is a small luggage room where they can store your luggage if you have a late departure, as we did.
The area surrounding the hotel is very pleasant and perfectly safe, not particularly touristy but there are plenty of brasseries, cafes and restaurants if you don't fancy venturing back into the heart of Paris. We enjoyed the antipasti at the Tesoro d'Italie on the Boulevard St Marcel, and had a fantastically frantic meal at Chez Gladines, just off the Place d'Italie,on Rue des Cinq Dimants. Gare D'Austerlitz is within easy walking distance, as is the Gobelins metro station. Rue Mouffetard (famed for its quaint food shops and restaurants) is a short walk away, as is the Jardin des Plantes.
I'd definitely stay here again, and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to others - very nice indeed.
