Having stayed at this hotel some twenty years ago and found it to be rather good, perhaps it was a mistake to assume that it would be the same, or even better on a romantic return.
The bad points:
The room was so poor that we had to check whether we had been allocated a superior room (as booked) rather than a standard double. Even by Parisian standards the room was small, with a W.C. (separate from the bathroom) that measured just 27 inches wide by 31 inches deep, so not even a child could use the 'facility' without leaving the door open!
The room itself and the rest of the hotel are in dire need of updating and redecoration. No such thing as shabby chic here.
Breakfast was Pythonesque and overseen by two women - Ober Fuhrer and her trusty Ober Lieutenant. We are pretty laid back and accept that local custom and idiosyncrasies exist but the service and attitude left everything to be desired. The buffet breakfast was bare and when we (and many others) asked if the eggs, bacon, fruit etc were going to be replenished, the answer as a curt "5 minutes." 10 minutes later some eggs appeared, ten minutes after that some fruit (the eggs were by then cold) We gave up and stuck to the coffee - even that was awful by any standards. Although included in the room rate, we didn't bother on the second morning, preferring to find somewhere else and pay.
The staff - a shame because this could have been a plus. a) Some reassuring emails passed back and forth before our arrival when we asked if a dinner reservation could be made at a particular restaurant - an important part of our plans. On arrival we were informed that the reservation had been made. A trip across town that evening, a confident walk into the restaurant was met with 'sorry no reservation and we're full." When we questioned the reception staff we received the usual Parisian shrug. We pressed for the matter to be looked into and as we were leaving, an explanation by email - we're still waiting. b) Similarly, we asked if they could check whether Eurostar was running normally, given the transport strike. They promised to do so and let us know. Nothing! We eventually found out from the night porter. c) We waited patiently to check in whislt the receptionsit finished a phone call. Duly finished he turned his attention to us for at least five seconds at which point the phone rang again and he picked up immediately. Clearly this is part of the training as exactly the same thing happened on check out. With the exception of the night porter, our sense is that none of these people will progress far in their chosen career.
The good points: The bed was comfortable and................... We checked out
