“Thumbs Up”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 December 2011

Thumbs up for the hotel Americain in Paris. Arrived ridiculously early to be met by a very friendly doorman who did not laugh out loud when trying my schoolboy French. He took care of our luggage whilst we set forth in Paris. All the staff we encountered here were very helpful and friendly. The hotel is small with little in the way of facilities, but we found it to be clean and its position is very good. A couple of minutes walk to the Republic metro one way and 15 minutes or so walk to the Notre Dame in the other direction. The hotel is surrounded by cafés, restaurants, and bars. We had a bedroom (smallish) on the first floor at the front which could have been the noisiest room in the house, but as it turned out we were not disturbed by noise. The breakfast is minimal lets say, with croissant, bread roll with pre pack butter and jam. The drinks being served from a space age machine. Take your toiletries as you are provided with a small bar of soap only. If you need to dry your hair you must ask for the hair dryer at reception. The Americain is adequate, clean and convenient.

“okay for 1-2 nights”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 December 2011

Before booking, I read all the reviews, which seemed solid for a 2 star hotel. My initial impression seemed to confirm many of the comments -- great location, small rooms, etc. However, not sure about staying more than 1-2 nights. The reasons: room really isn't very clean -- including bathroom; doors were chipped, carpets heavily stained; likewise all of the furnishings in room looked worn -- bedspread and sheets were especially bad (& even the leather sofa in the lobby looks overly worn). The lack of any soundproofing made it difficult to sleep soundly. All in all, it was passable for one night (which is all we thankfully needed), but feel a longer stay would have been depressing. Not worth the money.

One more item: we were charged a 5 euro "booking fee" which was added to our bill. Our attempts to have it removed were ignored.

“Good-priced Paris hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 November 2011

The best think about this hotel is the location. I love Marais and all the cafes, restaurants and lovely galleries and boutiques near by. It's not far from Rur Bretagne, with excellent patisserie, epicerie and cheese shops.
Hotel Americain is two star, so it's small and basic but clean with friendly staff. The breakfast is criossant, bread, cereal, juice and hot drinks (from a machine but a good one). The room was small but clean - which is all I need from somewhere to lay my head in between sight-seeing and eating out.
If you're on a budget, this could be a good choice.

“Great stay for two stars”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 November 2011

This hotel is only two stars but offers great service.

First of all it has a great location. The Republique metro station is just around the corner and just as close you find two more metro stations (the metro stations in Paris are just 500 meters apart). You also have the Marais area close by. There you find shopping and it's very nice during the evening.

The hotel in it self was clean and well taken care of. We could check in early and the front desk was very friendly. They helped a lot and they all talked English.

That french people should be rude is just a myth I must say. We met no one that was not helpful or friendly. Not all knew English but they tried to help anyway. A good thing is to start with a bonjour or salut and then talk English. It is appreciated.

The room was not big but I have seen smaller. Bed, a small desk with a chair and a wardrobe was all that was in the room. The beds were very comfortable. There was a french balcony towards the small road that runs outside the hotel (a little used one). The walls had tapestries so the acoustics of the room was a bit unpleasant.

The lavatory was clean and of a normal size. Had a toilet, bath, sink and blow dryer. And the water was always hot ( otherwise I often find that a problem at cheaper hotels).

The room was cleaned every day but no new sheets.

“Fantastic little hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 October 2011

I took my Girlfriend here for her birthday and the hotel was nothing but helpful. Arrived early and were able to check in. Reception staff all spoke very good english. Hotel is very easy to find not far from Metro Republique (can travel anywhere on the Metro) or as we done took a walk from Gard Nord. Upon arrival we were given a map and staff seemed very friendly. You can walk to Notre Damn from here and stroll down the narrow streets looking into the small cafes and shops.
Continental breakfast was great and the staircase down to the dinning room adds character to this little hotel.
Downsides were the TV not being loud enough to hear, but we were hardly in the room to use it. Shower head kept falling off the rail and a mirror at the desk would have been handy for girls doing hair and make up. But these are only minor details.

I would recommend this hotel to anybody visiting Paris.

Room Tip: Aim to go higher. not many views from 1st floor.
