My wife didn't want to stay at my favorite hotel near Place de Clichy, so I let her pick this time. She wanted an elevator, proximity to the Eiffel Tower and HVAC. The Royal Phare seemed to meet the criteria.. It's very close to the Metro (Ecole Militare). There's a Carrefour store on the street next to the hotel's entrance.
We get there... it's a short flight of steps to the elevator, and a not so short flight of steps to the reception, which is located in their breakfast room. The elevator... well it fulfills the letter of the definition, but really, it is more a large dumb waiter. There's room for you and one bag or 2 people and no bags, or 2 bags and no people.
The room was worn; I think that's the kindest way to put it. HVAC? Open the window! (the breakfast area has HVAC). But opening the window lets the street noise in, and that means you get to hear the police sirens, the locals arguing, and (worse) the delivery trucks at 4:30am delivering to the Carrefour. To be fair, we had no bedbug problems.
Breakfast: I'm not enamored with hotel breakfasts, so having the Carrefour next door was an unexpected bonus. We got our breakfast there, at considerably less cost and far greater variety. You can also get the ingredients for a nice picnic lunch there. Besides, how else will you see how much Parisians pay for their groceries?
Eiffel Tower: The hotel is at the far end of the greenbelt that makes up the Champ de Mars. It's a long walk up to the tower. But there are many photo ops along the way that you might have missed otherwise. Be sure to go out at night and look at the lights.
Bottom line: It was ok for 4 days. Price was right; we could have paid much, much more. Not sure I'd stay there again. YMMV.
Room Tip: Up, up, up... and perhaps away from the street side.
