“Good value for a great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 May 2011

We checked in and were very pleased with the quality of this hotel and the location for the price (approx 100E per night). We'd booked a quad room so the kids had their own beds which seem to be hard to find in Europe, room turned out to be on rue des Martyrs side of the hotel with a small balcony (only room to have one).

Furnishings were simple and room was reasonably sized, had a 30" or so Flat Panel screen hanging on one wall, room was made up daily and staff were all courteous, We didn't take advantage of the 7E pp breakfast but rather spent 1/2 that at the small supermarket 200m down rue des Martyrs, they loaned us plates and cutlery from the breakfast room. Elevator was so small that only our luggage fitted into it so we sent it up and walked up.

Overall our expectations weren't high but we were pleasantly surprised, had family staying in another hotel (as they hadn't liked the reviews for Clauzel), and aside from being more expensive their room was smaller, had no view, and had a moldy smell...

Room Tip: On rue des Martyrs for people watching

“Not the best budget hotel I've been in”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 February 2011

I booked this hotel because of the following: cheap, good location, it had a lift!

Cheap - I booked during the winter so I paid almost nothing, and I got just what I paid for. The hotel is old but it's clean. The room is small and gave me a dismal feeling as soon as I entered it, but then again I hardly stayed at the hotel so I really didn't mind so much. Their TV had mostly French channels so I never got to enjoy that. The phone didn't work. Bathroom is not too small and it's clean too. The sink wasn't working on my first night but as the staff promised it worked the next morning.

Location - very good location. Less than 10 minute walk to the closest Metro, very close to the bus stop, the neighborhood had a variety of restaurants to choose from, there was a nice fruit stand at the corner, and there's even a Carrefour Express almost next door. It's also 10 minutes away from the Opera where most hop on hop off buses stopped.

A Lift - A lift in these budget hotels in Paris is rare, so that's a plus even though it fit just me and one suitcase.

The staff also very friendly and most of them speak English.

“Not that bad”

We stayed here for 4 nights last week, and after reading some of the reviews i was more than a little worried about are stay, although im pleased to report i didnt find any cockroaches or have anything stolen.
The hotel itself is in a pretty touristy area, near the pigalle metro station and 5 min walk from the moulin rouge and about a 15 min walk to sacre coure, the 2nd highest point in the city apart from the eifle tower.
The lobby of the hotel is pretty misleading, as its quite well presented and modern, just when you get up to your room it looks like your nans decorated it, all pale pink and lilac textured wallpaper, abit dated,
We stayed in a triple room on the second floor, over looking rue des martyrs, it was clean, a little cramped but nothing overly wrong with it, especially for the price we paid, and we were out all day anyway, a little noisey with all the cars but nothing that disrupted our sleep.
Breakfast wasnt amazing, just pastries, bread, cereals, fruit, basics really, but was one less meal to pay out for in paris.
Over all i was pleasently surprised as i thought this hotel was going to be terrible, but it wasnt, althought its abit dated, but its a cheap clean hotel in a brilliant location in a pricey city

“Great Neighborhood”

We really enjoyed our stay at this hotel. No, it's not POSH but,IT IS THE REAL THING. A small 100 year old hotel with a spiral staircase that left just enough room to add an elevator. My 6'4" husband and one large piece of luggage fit.The breakfast was continental, lots of bread choices but, the nice gentleman remembered coffee for my husband and tea for me without asking. St. Georges metro is right around the corner and Cadet is easy walking distance..There are lots of great cafes &shops on the street.AFTER A DAY OF SITE SEEING COME BACK AND EAT DINNER THERE. IT IS WORHT IT.Rue Des Martyrs also has lots of beautiful fruit and vegetable stalls for snacks. It has a great neighborhood feel.People about daily activities from getting to work, taking kids to school on a bicycle or, buying groceries, to going out for the night with friends. The room was small but, clean with crisp clean sheets daily, hair dryer and shower. .SACRE COEUR is in walking distance, A MUST SEE AT NIGHT FOR THE VIEW AND THE CANDLE LIT BASILICA.WE DEFINITELY RECOMMEND HOTEL CLAUZEL FOR THE LOCATION AND THE PRICE.

“Ok until I found a cockroach in my cereal”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 August 2010

On first impression I was not too disappointed, the receptionist placed me in a room overlooking the Rue Clauzel at my request. The room was clean and the bathroom was fine apart from a broken shower fitment which meant I had to hold the shower head. The decor in the room was tired and dated. As it was quite hot I had to sleep with the window open which lead to several nights poor sleep because of the noise from the road outside. Air conditioning would have helped. Later in the week when the temperature cooler I was able to close the window and the double glazing cut out most of the noise. No doubt for most of the year noise would not be a problem.
The breakfast offering was very poor with a hunk of bread, butter, jam and some truly horrible processed cheese. On offer were also cereals and various toast breads and pre-packaged patisseries which were not nice to eat. There was orange juice (cheap and nasty) and machine coffee, tea or chocolate which were all pretty horrible and doled out at the rate of one cup only. If I booked this hotel again I would book without breakfast and go out to somewhere for a nice croissant and decent coffee. I might have been more forgiving but on my third morning I found a large and lively cockroach in my bowl of cereal. When I alerted the staff, they promptly threw out the contents of the dispenser and made up a bowl of fresh cereal from a new pack - however, I found it difficult to eat cereal for the rest of the week as I was so disgusted. I subsequently saw another cockroach in the lift. I did not feel that any steps were taken to ensure proper decontamination had taken place. The staff seemed only concerned to keep it quiet and did not seem to understand the potential health risks to guests.
On the basis of this experience I would not book this hotel again.
