We couldn't get booked into one of our usual hotels but ended up rather pleased with this one. A good central location for sightseeing, a helpful desk staff, and a pleasant if slightly eccentric room. We had a room (an upgrade we were told) on the 6th floor with a balcony - not that it was balcony weather in truth - and a bit of a view of La Madeleine, and of the rooftops of Paris which is I suppose a bit romantic. It was pleasant and different - a small sitting room with bathroom and separate toilet on one level, and a bedroom reached by stairs (highly polished, so careful in the middle of the night in the dark, if like us you are of an age to have to make nocturnal visits downstairs) to a mezzanine level . There were two televisions, one in each "room".
We rented the safe for 3 Euros a day - worth it for the peace of mind. We only had one breakfast in the hotel - it was O.K. but no better than that. There are plenty other options locally. The location was handy for the Grand Palais (good Stein exhibition) and Opera Garnier (the daytime tour is worth doing). Also in easy reach of the big stores on Haussmann - good Xmas animations in Printemps windows, and usual spectacular tree and dome in Galeries Lafayette. The hotel value was pretty good for us having booked fairly early through Eurostar for a combined train/hotel deal. Later booking would have been a different story - I checked.
On a general level, is there serious belt tightening in Paris now? Where are the spectacular lights there used to be on the Rue Royale, and the Champs Elysee from Concorde? We went for a drink at a Left Bank street which had some Xmas lights, but by the time we came out of the bar at eight o'clock the lights were switched off presumably to save some Euros.
I suppose it's a sign of the times.
