“Good location - good value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

For details of their beautiful interior, please refer to other member’s description. As from my side I may just add that they have a very reasonable price for Paris (100 EUR without b’fast) and that although not spacious, the rooms are very OK, nice and clean. Altough I must admit my room seemes nicer than those pictured above, it must have been refurbished. The walls are just a bit thin, and so I had the pleasure to hear my neighbour snoring all night. Breakfast was charged 14 Euro, let’s say you’ll find better deals around. Staff is not that friendly, but that's common in Paris.

“Centrally placed”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 December 2011

The hotel has been fairly recently renovated and I was fortunate to be accommodated in a very large room (2 x double beds) with spiral staircase leading to a mezzanine floor with another 2 double beds and second bathroom and flat screen TV. Prices in large cities are never cheap but this room (108 - but 109 is very similar) was competitive in comparison with others of similar grade locally and would be perfect for a family and very good value.
The reception staff were welcoming and gave good information about local restaurants. It is quite usual for Paris hotels not to offer a bar or restaurant and this one is no exception but considering the location and the wealth of local places to eat and drink to suit all pockets this is no disadvantage - in fact quite the opposite.
Breakfast was fine although the furniture was a triumph of style over function. I would certainly stay here again if I could be sure of a decent sized room (didn't view any others) as the proximity of the Bourse, Opera and Galeries Lafayettes is a big plus.
In my view as a foreigner, Paris is what you make it. So try out the language, sample the excellent food and drink, travel by Metro to visit the great galleries and museums and whether on business or pleasure relax and enjoy. You could do far worse than to make Hotel Malte your base.

Room Tip: Ask for 108 or 109. They are both huge and can sleep 4 without a problem and face the courtyard.

“Bullied By Receptionist”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 August 2011

I stayed on business for 3 nights in July. Due to some mayor event in Paris, this was the only available room among 5 and 4 star hotels in the area.
There is no bar, no restaurant… and no other service/amenity AT ALL in this hotel. At the check-in desk there is a video camera pointed towards the desk… (be aware of this while you digit your credit card PIN). The front door locks at midnight/1AM… but doorbell is available and functioning. ☺ Breakfast is fair choice… well disposed and catered to attentively… but after the first morning as I tried it… I did not go back for another… For my personal breakfast preferences versus price (25Eur)… it just did not deliver.
I booked the room directly trough their own website (their 3 night “special rate”) but they were surprised to hear that one can actually do that! At first I concluded that probably their conviction that I booked trough somewhere… what they consider “low-cost” website… (!??!), provided me with the “cheapest” room… and hence… the related “discounted” personal treatment. Until I… unfortunately… encountered all the rest.
Here my personal experience:
My room was so small that I had to place my small (cabin luggage size!) trolley on top of the fridge if I wanted to get out of the bed without moving the suitcase back and forth. At the bottom of the bed I had to walk side-ways to pass. I leave it to your imagination. ☺ (yes… even smaller then that!). I asked repeatedly to change rooms… to no avail… was told that they were “fully booked”. For all the discomfort of this situation… I could well go with that without complaint… (it was hard to get ANY room in the area in the first place)… no problem… when you have “time window” constraint like I had, things like this can easily happen… if only… at the check-out I was not “instructed” that all I needed do was “SIMPLY ASK!” for the room change”. Insult to injury?
The double bed was a bliss to sleep in… and the bathroom… even if it looked like a miniature of a “real” bathroom… was clean and well equipped with what you would find in a veritable 4* hotel. Plenty of towels and hot water. Defying its minute size… it did convey cosiness… providing to all the necessary.
Cannot really be speaking of the staff since I basically only spoke to two: day-time receptionist, night time receptionist/bellboy/porter/phone & internet expert/waiter… etc… etc… for two days… plus I met a third receptionist upon my check-out. The late two were kind and helpful… trying to do their best… in their conditions… whereas I highly suggest to avoid the receptionist called Marion.
Occasionally one does hit on an unkind receptionist… but such cheap arrogance... I have not experienced often… if at all… throughout my extensive travel record. The “heavy crime” that I must have obviously committed to deserve this treat… was that after my breakfast I tried to check-back with her… if my taxi, that I had ordered the night before, has been confirmed. I had an important meeting… and knowing well the morning difficulty with taxies I took my precautions the night before. She kept telling me that “at that time in the morning she cannot get the taxi for me”…. and to absolutely NO avail I tried to explain to her that I was NOT asking her to get me one… I just wanted the confirmation on the one that I ordered the night before… All she really needed to do is check one of their numberless yellow “post-it” notes all over their reception desk… (yes, this is how they operate!) or with the night-receptionist… that by the way… apologised with me as he saw me there at the breakfast… that he was “just about” to give me the wake-up call… but he was too “busy”. ☺☺☺ However he DID… diligently… order a taxi for me already the previous evening… ☺ All went well at the end… but certainly not due to Marion. Not then… (it gets even better!)… nor the day after: I had business lunch… (hence no morning rush!)… so I called the reception (poor me… Marion on duty!) for a taxi at the certain time… I did not receive neither the confirmation… nor the “arrival” call… I waited in the room… no call… so as the due-time ticked… I went down to the lobby (in their cranky elevator… that most of the time was “out of order” anyway)…. to find out what was happening… only to find the scene fit for a Fish-Market: angry taxi driver… yelling… Marion sneering at me that “taxi is WAITING!”… and then hissing back at him…. What a scene!
Later in the taxi I learned that he was frustrated with her… since darling Marion kept telling him that she would notify me… but did NOT… and as he insisted, she… instead…. simply gave him my room number (!?!?!?!?). (I suppose this must be legal in France…)
I am not worried… about the extra taxi bill… that I underwent as to calm down the driver… (Being a female “solo” traveller, safety… in a foreign country, for me is an important issue!)… I will not go bankrupt for that… It is the “non existent” service… but mainly… Marion’s obviously deliberate malfeasance…
For such… no (hand winding) apology... however slimy humble Marion tried to appear while apologising to me the next day… upon my check-out… (knowing that her Director was listening!)… I accepted her apology… (sheer “noblesse oblige”!)… but I did refuse to give her any more of my time. She took already more of my attention then legitimate… besides… it would have been the apex… if at the end… because of her pressing “need to talk to me”, I would have also missed my plane!
True… the hotel is not really expensive… although 224E (over 300 USD) per first night and 175 for each night after… for what I got… I do not consider a “good deal”. (For the comparison… do check the rates of the trusted chains… and their classic rooms – 3times the size of what I had in this hotel… in real 4/5 * amenities/services… at equivalent… if not better… location! They start off with 145E ) There WAS a reason why I found the only free room just here…. ☺ ☺ ☺
I found their website rather misleading. It advertised “free internet” which was available only on my last night there… and it was so slow that I could not do my Airline web-check-in because the “session expired” before the page could load… First two evenings… I was told that “their server had problems”. The lobby –alias- breakfast area pictures are accurate… but except the good bed quality… clean bathroom… and the tiny garden… (from which I escaped when I discovered that I could see trough the satin glass bathroom windows… the guests sitting on their toilets… and for the acoustics of the garden… you can hear them too!!!) in my experience… there is absolutely no trace of 4 stars here… unless a small plush lobby in a hotel is enough to acquire 4* rating.
A handy “central location” Bed & Breakfast? I could go for that… even for the very same price… (it is in the centre of Paris after all!)…. just fine… but if I knew I was sleeping in a B&B… I would have had realistic expectations… and could have hence… made my “stay plans” accordingly. Example: The evening of my arrival I had arranged with my business partners to meet me at the hotel restaurant for dinner… Who in the world would have imagined that 4* hotel does not have one!? However, it was easy to find a restaurant nearby for (an excellent!) meal… but since we had to discuss things that evening (it gets even better!)…. we, after dinner sat at the table in their “garden” and asked for a bottle of water. Guess what? We were offered a “glass” of water from receptionist’s “private” bottle… He was trying to avoid us the extra charge… sweet darling… ☺ Eventually he dug-up a bottle of champagne from somewhere… which we then took… and consequently the “new” bottle of water showed up too… ☺ The receipt for this that I signed as “room charge” was then scribbled on one of their yellow “post it” papers. A four star hotel?
In all honesty… I would have come to sleep here… in any case… because I got the only available room (hotel looked good on their web-page!) and mainly because of my pressing need of time and area restrictions… but if I knew what to expect, my trip organization would have been significantly different.
In my opinion this hotel is largely over-rated and significantly understaffed. Some employees really try their best… but the amount of guests and work load simply cuts down on delivering any quality service really… which for the nature of this hotel is limited to the calling a taxi for you... Little else of the “services” this hotel provides the staff to deliver anyway. Not the staff’s fault.
Unkindness… is... though. ☺

Room Tip: Best rooms.... are in some other hotel... :)

“Good location terrible hotel”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 June 2011

The hotel lobby is fine and presents a great initial impression but the rooms!!!
I asked for a double and got a twin, there was no AC which one would expect in a hotel of this standard. There was not even an unused electrical socket to charge my phone. The rooms were shabby and small. The one allocated was right on the main drag and as such noisy (no chance of opening the window to cool down if you wanted to sleep)). Then to cap it all and this is obviously not the hotel's fault, a work crew started breaking concrete outside on the street at 9.00am after a very late night for me. Not recommended. Ths hotel badly needs a refit......

Room Tip: Find somewhere else.

“Excellent location with helpful staff close to major Paris attractions and within walking distance of most.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 April 2011

Room was large enough for myself and my 17 year old grand daughter, but small by North American standards. Our room faced the courtyard and was quiet for sleeping. Room had a mini fridge but with the cost of eating out in Paris we could have used a coffee pot and a microwave in the room. Aside from a bathroom door that didn't really stay closed, the room was in good repair and clean. Towels were replaced daily. The hotel does not have a restaurant but does serve breakfast for 15 Euros per person. While the selection is good, we didn't feel it was worth the price. You can easily get a coffe, croissant and fresh orange juice for 5 Euros or so in the immediate neighbourhood. Staff was helpful and courteous for our 7 day stay. Room had a safe for storing our valuables. Safe neighbourhood with park nearby and within easy walking distance of major Paris attractions. Free in room WiFi.
