I had been advised by a seasoned Paris visitor to stay central, preferably on the left bank. I found the Abbatial and was hesitant at first due to some negative reviews. The price was right (for Christmas week) and the location was awesome. I even emailed the hotel prior to my departure asking for a room on the top floor and they responded promptly that they would definitely try.
When I called to inform them that we were not arriving in Paris until the following day due to a railroad strike in Belgium, they were very understanding and still honored our reservation. No fees were charged, the rate remained the same. I figured they would not be able to honor my top floor request but I was wrong. We still got a room on the sixth floor (#66, I think), facing Blvd St. Germain with a great view.
The room was fairly small (for American standards) but it was clean. The bathroom was very clean as well. The coffee maker worked just fine as well as the TV and the safe. They kept our bags for the entire day when we checked out for free (our train was at 9pm). Since there wasn't a bellman, we didn't even have to tip!
It's a definitely family run hotel not a chain nor 5 stars. Since I was not expecting The Four Seasons or The Ritz-Carlton, I was not disappointed.
