I recently stayed at Hostellerie du Marais based on TripAdvisor reviews. The location is unbeatable - you're less than a minute from Place des Vosges, and only about a 25 minute walk to the Louvre.
The Hostellerie itself was mediocre. The front desk staff were indifferent, and I observed them being less than helpful towards a number of guests. One thing to note is that each time you leave the Hostellerie, you are required to leave your key at the desk. What this means is that if you run into the hotel to drop bags off briefly before heading out again, the staff will be exasperated and roll their eyes at you. This happened not only to me, but also to other guests on the floor where I was staying, and we had a good laugh about it. The irony of course is that it's the hostellerie's policy to return the keys, not guests asking if they can leave them.
The room itself was clean when I arrived, with the exception of the bathroom which had soap scum from the previous guest all over the sink and tap. When I called down to reception to see if I could get it cleaned, I was essentially told that nothing could be done as the cleaning staff had gone home for the day. I ended up cleaning the tap and sink myself so that I could use it. Having said this however, the cleaning staff left the room and bathroom meticulously clean the next two days.
The rooms are on the small size, even for Paris. There is no where you can leave a suitcase without tripping over it constantly. Amenities such as a coffee maker / kettle or alarm clock are not provided, and I was unable to get an iron or an ironing board during my stay, despite asking for them.
One of the biggest downsides to the hotel is layout. In order to access the guest rooms, once you come off the elevator, you turn either right or left and go through a door. The space you enter is just big enough for two people and one suitcase, and then you have a either two, or three rooms leading off that antechamber. What this means is that you will hear absolutely everyone on your floor either coming or going at all hours.
The phone in my room had been unplugged by the previous guest, and it didn't occur to me to check the phone when I checked in to the hotel. The front desk staff always know when you are in the hotel (this goes back to the room key policy) and when I didn't pick up my phone when they were trying to put a call through to my room, the front desk staff member actually came up to my room, hammered on the door and yelled "Why aren't you answering your phone?" Naturally, the guests in the two rooms next to mine both opened their doors, as did I, to find out what was going on. Frankly, I'm not accustomed to being yelled at by hotel staff, and while I had no idea that they were trying to put a call through, and even less of an idea that the phone had been unplugged, they could certainly have been more polite and could have handled the situation in a more professional manner.
So overall, a solid mediocre stay. This was my third trip to Paris in the last 9 months, and for the money, I think Jardins du Marais, although a few blocks further away, is a much better option. Same price point, much better rooms and much nicer staff.
