Upon check-in for our six night stay in December, we were given a room on the second floor directly in front of the elevator. Thought the location to the elevator might present an issue, but it didn't at all. We loved our (Classic) Room: it faced the street, which was very quiet, and had a quintessential Parisien street view; it was surprisingly large, very warm and cozy, and clean. Thank you, Cedric, for offering us this room.
In general, staff were pleasant. Some front desk staff at times appeared rather serious, but very busy and dedicated. We seemed to interact most with Raluca, who was particularly approachable. All front desk staff were very gracious!!
Breakfasts were excellent and served in a warm, inviting room. Although hot items included only bacon and eggs, there was a large variety of cold items which was filling. Delicious smoked salmon was offered every second day. The coffee was excellent and the croissants were the best I've ever had, anywhere! Unfortunately, the dinner menu and the one dinner we had (offered in the bar area), were disappointing, especially in comparison to K & K hotels in other cities.
As mentioned in one of Rick Steves' Christmas television program, Christmas in Paris is rather understated. And, it certainly is. We were in Paris two weeks before Christmas, and only a handful of cafes/shops were decorated. Our hotel was not decorated at all. The 'huts' at the Christmas Markets were a rather cold white and blue color, as opposed to the cheerful colors elsewhere in Europe; did not see true handcrafted items for sale. The lights along the Champs Elysees (which are apparently different each year) were disappointing; according to one front desk staff, many other people thought so as well. However, the huge Christmas tree under the beautiful stained glass dome at the Galeries Lafayette is worth a visit.
Apart from the 'must see' city attractions, one of particular interest was the Sunday morning market on Rue Mouffetard in the Latin Quarter (a long, but do-able) walk from the hotel. From 9 am to 1 pm on Sundays, at the lower end of this market in the Pere Medard Church square, a couple play an accordian and sing, and people (locals and tourists, alike) dance. Aso, the Opera House is stunningly beautiful both inside and outside.
Memorable (simple) meals include Au Pere Louis for the cassoulet and french onion soup, the Creperie des Arts for crepes, and Angelina Tea Salon for croquet monsieurs. Favourite macaron was Ladouree's salted caramel.
We don't usually visit the same city twice (too many other places to see); in this case, we would like to return to Paris and in particular to the K & K Cayre Hotel.
