“Not the best...”

I had to stay at this hotel while traveling on business in Paris. This hotel has a nice conference center on the 2nd floor, but the hotel is not that great.

First, it was difficult to find the entrance to the hotel. It is located at a train station and the entrance is hidden as it looks just like the windows next to it. After 10 minutes I finally found it and encountered the small staircase I had to carry my bag up before reaching the very small elevator to the 3rd floor. At check-in, no one really spoke English, but we figured thing out and I went to find my room. The hotel hallways were black, red and gold. I felt like I was in a bad adult film. That aside, I found my room which was just large enough for the Queen size bed and my suitcase (barely). There was a TV that worked fine and a small desk area. The room wasn’t dirty but it really wasn’t clean either. The carpet and walls were stained or scuffed and the tile was broken in the bathroom. The toilet did not flush well either. When I requested a different room or an upgrade I was willing to pay for, I was told they are fully booked and had nothing available.

I made the best of it, until the trains started arriving and departing below the hotel. The room vibrated and shook every time the trains moved. This went on until after midnight and started again early in the AM. The wake up call I requested 2 nights never came. Breakfast was available on the 2nd floor – but was clearly not operated by Best Western. It was a simple continental breakfast.

I was seriously disappointed in my experience at this hotel.

“Good place to stay and great value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 June 2007

We stayed for two nights in early June in a twin room. We paid roughly 80 euros a night which is not bad for a 3 star in Paris. The room was of a fair size and nicely air conditioned. The room was clean and there was ample towels etc.

The reception staff were helpful and friendly.

The only drawback was that there was some work going on on the forecourt outside the hotel which started at 7am but the sign said this was due to finish mid June.

Would stay here again on next visit to Paris.

“Okay place to stay”

The location was decent, right across the street from the Metro and Indiana Cafe. The room was a nice size with a comfy bed. The staff was typical French, rude! No smiles, nothing. It is right next to their train station and had contstruction in front so not easily noticable. I would stay here again! The bath was a nice size and clean. However, no shower curtain which I found strange and dangerously slippery exiting the tub. So careful! If you thinking about it, I'd say go for it.

  • Liked — Nice size room
  • Disliked — Carpeted floors (yikes!)
  • Tips/Secrets — Eat at the Indiana Cafe for American Food, great quesedillas!

“This is a hidden gem”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 November 2006

We had been staying in a nearby hotel which proved to be an absolute disaster. We decided to look around the area for another better hotel - we wanted to be close to the station as we were going on the Eurostar to London. We discovered this gem hidden behind some construction work at the Gare D'l Est. The rooms were small by USA standards but well equipped with a mini bar, comfortable beds, airconditioning. The staff were were very helpful and friendly - what a change from our previous hotel. We decided to pay the 10 Euros for the buffet breakfast and were not dissapointed as it was great.
I would definately recommend this hotel for its price and proximity to the metro and the main railway stations in Paris.

  • Liked — Good value compared to other tourist hotels in Paris
  • Disliked — Nothing really
  • Tips/Secrets — USA travellers note that you must lower your expectations when looking for hotels in Paris

“An air-conditioned saviour during a Paris heatwave!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 July 2006

We stayed here in July 2006 during what seemed to be a bit of a heatwave in Paris. Upwards of 32 degrees celsius everyday of our 7 day stay in Paris and this hotel saved our trip to Paris! We had initially stayed at another hotel in the Republique area which proved to be very noisy, hot and small. We weren't getting any sleep and after 2 nights we decided to move hotels. We went to the tourist information centre near the station "Pyramides" and asked if they could find us a hotel with air-conditioning. They were very helpful and found this Best Western for us. It saved our holiday. We got a great rate, possibly because we were booking on the same day we were staying there. I think the rooms are usually around 90 Euro a night and we got ours for 45 Euro a night. We stayed 5 nights and an additional night a few days later when we came back through Paris.

The hotel is situated right at Gare De L'Est...in the same building really. So it is very handy to transport. We were travelling around on the metro all the time so it was great for us and only a stop away from Gare du Nord if you are travelling via Eurostar. The hotel is set back off the street a bit so traffic noise never bothered us. You can hear the trains rumbling nearby but they didn't bother us and stop around midnight anyway. There was some construction work going on around the building during the day but stopped in the evening so not a problem either. The rooms are air-conditioned but you can still open the window if you prefer. Our first room was quite big with everything you'd expect in a basic hotel. Mini-bar with beer and softdrinks (the mini-bar in our first hotel was "switched off for the summer because of the heat"!?!?!?!), television with french channels, a German channel, and a couple of English channels...mostly with news and sport. Both rooms had a bath with shower over it. There was a wardrobe, luggage rack, chair, desk space. There was a hairdryer in both rooms but no tea or coffee making facilities. I don't remember if there was an iron or ironing board though. It was very comfortable during the hot weather.
There is a lift from the entrance up to the second level lobby which houses reception and a bar area. The staff were excellent, really friendly. We tried our very basic French out on them and they were happy to speak English if we didn't understand. They were all very good. They greeted with us happily every single time we arrived or left the hotel. My partner was unwell at one stage and the reception happily called a doctor to come to the hotel for us. They were also helpful with faxes. The rooms were clean and in good shape. We really enjoyed our stay here. It is fancy but it is modern and newish looking.
There are lots of cafes and restaurants around for food so we didn't eat at the hotel except for one breakfast which we had sent to the room. A standard sort of breakfast for Paris I think, tea or coffee, juice, croissant, bread, jam. Just what we needed before wandering around Paris all day.
This place was really great and we would definitely stay there again, especially if it is in the middle of a heat wave!

  • Liked — The air conditioning and the service
  • Disliked — Nothing
  • Tips/Secrets — Great if using the metro a lot and great during a European heatwave.
