Yes, this hotel is a bit expensive, circa Euro 300 a night to be more precise. But the location is so convenient that it makes the extra expenditure worthwhile. The Champs Elysees is literally a five minute stroll away from the hotel. The Grand Palais (where the "Renoir in the Twentieth Century" exhibition begins on September 23rd next) is within a couple of minutes walk of the Sofitel. And Rue Montaigne (with its fashionable shops) is just a stone's throw away. Not to mention the harbour for the Seine boat trips (a mere ten minutes walk away).
The room is quite large by Paris standards, with a divinely comfortable bed. Just the kind of sack worth falling into after a long day exploring Paris. Room service is speedy and of a high calibre. Continental style breakfasts with excellent filter coffee and the freshest of orange juice. Very well stocked mini-bar. And the tagliatelli with salmon dish I ordered was served with brio and tasted delicious.
It is true that the hotel shares its entrance with the French Press Club. But, if you're in Paris because you want a comfortable place to stay, the absence of a central hotel lobby will not be a problem for you. Also worth mentioning that hotel guests can use the bar of the French Press Club which serves killer cocktails (in the positive sense of the term). And the Press Club bar is also a pleasant place in which to relax (and - if the mood takes you - chat to local reporters/correspondents) in the early evening before hitting the town.
Paris was looking splendid last week in the sunshine. If you like tranquillity, have a coffee in the exquisite garden of the Petit Palais (just a few minutes away from the hotel). It was also great to return to sample the delights of the Musee D'Orsai. The collection of impressionists paintings (in rooms 28-48 on the fifth floor) is really sublime. The Musee D'Orsai is always guaranteed to put you in a good mood. And it was only 15 minutes away from my base at the Sofitel. Magnifique.
