“Oh dear - quite a miserable hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 February 2011

OK, lets try to pick out the good points. Hmmmm, I think the towels were clean and soft. That's about it.

So, onto the bad. Booked the hotel believing I was getting 4* hotel in Paris. Yes, I got a favourable discount on the price but thought this was because I was getting a great deal. Don't be fooled - the discounted prices are still excessive for the quality you'll get. This is supposed to be a 200Euro a night hotel? Never in a million years.

Outside they've covered up the star rating its that bad. Even discrediting it to a 3* hotel makes the other 3* hotels in the area look positively delicious. It really is as bad as people are writing on here.

Quite simply its not been loved or looked after for a good 20 years. The reception desk is battered and scuffed, and the trend follows into the lift and along the corridors. The dark wooden look everywhere makes the hotel seem dark and moody. The rooms, whilst beds and towels are clean, have not been decorated for years. The taps and shower are rusty and mirrors and tiles are aged and cracked. Its probably 2* quality.

The staff are rude and grumpy, and the breakfast isn't worth getting out of bed for. WiFi is limited to a small table in reception. If you leave the table, you lose the signal.

If I could say something good about this hotel, I would. Unfortunately, I found it to be quite a dump, so bad, I wiped my feet on the way out.

Steer well clear.

“Not a bad hotel, was cheap and met our needs”

We stayed at this hotel for 4 nights. Its clearly not a 4 star hotel and i noticed on enterence they have covered up there 4 star hotel sign.

Location:
The hotel is in a good location and easy walking distance to the centre of Paris and easy to get around on the metro or RER.
Staff:
The staff where very friendly and one evening when everything was shut (xmas eve) we where offered food from the kitchen - Croisants etc, which was very good of the hotel.
Room:
The room is very basic, the bed was only a double, it was more confitable than it looked. Bathroom is very basic and doesnt offer much in the way of shower gel etc so i would recommend bringing your own also. The shower was always warm and powerful. The heating didnt work in our room (seems to be a common problem in this hotel) but it was a little cold but not too bad, we where giving extra blanket which was good of the hotel. Rooms very dated but are adaquate.
Breakfast:
The breakfast in the morning is not bad. There is enough on offer to fill you up for a few hours. There was: bacon, egg's, cereal, toast, crossiants, yougurt, hams,, fruit, juices, tea, coffee. It was enough to fill you up for the morning.
Area:
The area is safe and full of lots of resturants and theatre's. Very close to metro and RER.
Other:
There was internet also whcih was ok from your own laptop. Not super fast but was adaquate.

I would recommend this as a basic 3 star hotel, dont expect a 4 star as its not but the hotel is good value for the money we paid. Around £330 for 4 nights (including breakfast)

“So bad we checked out early!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 December 2010

God only knows when this was granted 4 stars because I can tell you categorically this is NOT 4 star accommodation. The last time this resembled anything like luxury was probably sometime in the mid 80s and the place doesn't seem to have been updated since. The shabby, fading furniture and decor wasn't the best of starts while the peeling plaster in the bathroom and taps so old and cranky it took a wrapped-around towel and all my strength to get the shower going did nothing to help matters.

But we have stayed in worse (albeit while backpacking in the 3rd world), we were only there for 3 nights and since we weren't intending to spend too much time in the hotel anyway , we figured it'd do.

Except there was also the issue of the broken central heating. With temperatures outside barely getting above 1 degree celcius, this was pretty serious. The room was freezing and even with three extra blankets on the bed, we still woke up shivering at regular intervals. In the morning we complained. The receptionist didn't seem remotely surprised or even particularly concerned but said that it would be fixed or we would change rooms. As we left for the day we said we hoped it would be sorted out by the evening. "I hope so too" was all the receptionist could offer us.

Somewhat unsurprisingly it was not sorted out by that evening and when we complained again to the by now different receptionist, his advice was that we come down in the morning and "get very angry". The hotel was fully booked, he said, so we couldn't change rooms (so either he or the guy from the morning had lied about that) and the only thing he had available was a sofa bed in the staff quarters.

After a second night spent fully dressed beneath piles of blankets and sleeping fitfully in the cold, we checked out and moved to a different hotel.

All in all this was a terrible experience. The staff would not take responsibility, saying it wasn't their fault but we could email the manager for a refund if we wanted (we will, of course). That may be so but at the end of the day, it's not good enough. What is the point of employing hotel staff if they can't help their guests? This is the service and hospitality industry and we saw little of either. The quality of the accommodation is average at best and extremely falsely advertised. (Also, as an aside, both mornings we were awoken by housekeeping staff letting themselves in to clean - at 8am! - very odd).

PS If you want to stay in Montparnasse and are looking for a room for around £120 a night, try the Hotel Concorde round the corner. We ended up there on our last night and it surpassed the Villa Luxembourg in every sense.

“Two days without heating, snowing outside”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 December 2010

We weren't overly impressed on arrival, greeted as we were by shabby fittings and furniture, small and lumpy bed, bathroom fairly dated. But we figured it wasn't expensive (not cheap either) so we weren't too fussed.

That night the heating didn't work and it got very cold in the room. It was particularly cold that weekend and it was snowing outside, so it was incredibly uncomfortable. Both of us woke up shivering several times during the night.

We told reception staff in the morning, who said it would be fixed by that night or we would be moved to a different room. When we got back to the room, the heating still didn't work. The receptionist said there was no other room for us, so we spent another miserable night in the freezing cold.

The whole experience made us so angry and frustrated that we left the following morning and will be writing a letter of complaint and seeking a refund. We checked into a different hotel, the Concorde, for our final night.

Ironically, the Hotel Concorde is listed on most websites as a 3star, while Villa Luxembourg is a 4 star, yet the Concorde was vastly superior.

“Great hotel once upon a time”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 November 2010

This hotel does have everything to make it great but has let itself go over the years. This can be seen in the faded furniture/finishings and worn out mattress. The beds were not comfortable and the bathroom could do with some extra polishing.

Saying that, the room was quiet with a good view, had a kitchenette (we didn't use it) and TV, WiFi in the lobby/breakfast room, a decent breakfast buffet and a good location.

It's not a luxurious hotel at all but gets the job done.
