“Idiosyncratic charm and a perfect location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2011

A charming hotel that was clean and friendly and in a most perfect location. Accommodation in Paris, unless you can afford a top class hotel, is somewhat lacking when compared to UK standards. Accept this, and the Saint Merry won't disappoint. Situated in the bustling area of Marais full of shops, cafes, restaurants and Parisians this proved a perfect place to soak up Paris. A stones throw from the river and Notre Dame and a 40 minute walk to Sacre Coeur, as a base, was ideal. OK, it doesn't have a flat screen TV on the wall or a breakfast room (they will serve breakfast to your room) but if your in Paris who want's to be stuck inside their hotel!

“Wonderful location, atmosphere, but a little renovation would go a long way...”

As other reviewers have noted, this is the place to go if you like a quirky, gothic, medieval hotel that has not been doubletree'd or turned into a chain location. We had the room 9 (definitely recommended), high up near the church bells and with a great flying buttress looming over the double bed. It's atmospheric and cosy. The problem with the hotel is that basic maintenance issues that are both look-and-feel and practical seem to be left unaddressed - none are critical - a busted shower tap, broken lampshades and a very worn stair carpet; but they seem a little slipshod for a *** hotel, and easily fixed. But if you can ignore these (and we easily did) this is a great choice.

“Not for everyone”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 December 2010

I have stayed at the St. Merry many times. Except for one misunderstanding about my breakfast being ordered I have had an overall positive experience here. I will stress that it is not for everyone, and also that it needs to be updated.
That said, I am always welcomed like a long lost friend and the staff is always helpful and pleasant.
The location is superb, close to everything.
If you are considering staying here consider upgrading to one of the bigger rooms. The room with the flying buttresses is fun and they will let you see it if it is not occupied.
I stay here two or three times per year and I always look forward to going back.
Most of the rooms don't have A/C so don't stay here if that is of concern.
All of that said, the hotel is very unique and the location can not be beat.

“Imperfect hotel in the perfect location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 August 2010

My husband and I have stayed in many hotels across Europe, and we currently live in England, so we are not ones to be shocked by the smallish size of European hotel rooms. But Hotel Saint Merry takes the prize for the smallest "double" bed we have ever slept in. The room itself was also rather small, although we saw photos of other rooms that looked considerably larger so I suppose it's possible that we had an exceptionally small room. Although there is nothing inherently "wrong" with this hotel, other than the extremely small bed, there are many things that could be improved. In particular, we both felt somewhat accosted every time we left the hotel for the day. Twice, one of the employees chased us down the stairs to inquire about where we were going! When we replied "out for the day!" he seemed concerned that we were trying to leave permanently without paying our bill. It was truly bizarre since we weren't checking out for another two days! (I would add that this is not a hotel where the key should be returned to the desk when you leave for the day, so that was not the problem). I would add the caveat that the woman who worked the desk when I checked in was lovely and very friendly.

All that aside, the location for the Hotel Saint Merry honestly could not be better. For us, it was in the perfect spot. Since I don't travel to Paris to spend loads of time in a hotel room, the flaws of the hotel were not a damper on our weekend. Still, I would not return and I would probably seek out a different hotel in the Marais next time I visit Paris.

“the perfect place to celebrate our silver wedding anniversary”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 June 2010

This hotel is everything I love about french hotels - quirky, different, non-conformist. The staff were absolutely charming, and made us feel very welcome. Breakfast was brought to our room. There's no dining room, but as the hotel is in the thick of the city, eating is never going to be a problem. There were cafes and restaurants seconds from the hotel's door, and the Latin Quarter and St Germaine are just across the river. The room was small, but suited our needs. The situation was great, a quick stroll to the Seine, Notre Dame, the Latin Quarter or the Pompidou Centre. It has been beautifully and sympathetically restored, and staying there was a real joy.
However, if you count minibars, TVs, kettles, internet access and trouser presses as among your must-haves, you will be disappointed. This is a little place of magic where all that corporate dross has been left behind (although I'm sure they'd help with the internet thing as they are all delightful there). We really felt like we have been totally absorbed by the whole parisian thing, and especially in our fantastic hotel.
