We stayed here for 5 nights from late May to early June. This was our second time at this hotel (we last stayed here in 2005)-we booked this hotel again as the easy way out as we couldn't find anything available at 2 weeks' notice, which waas also relatively central at our budget (after making only a few enquiries) and because our last visit went smoothly (though nothing outstanding). We would have preferred to stay at the Marais or Saint Germain districts...
This hotel touts itself as a hotel du charme (see newspaper article outside hotel) and its decor is gentrified country with little touches such as Godiva chocolates on the bed when you first enter the room. The room is clean and the TV works. The bathroom could be better, as one is obliged to shower in the bathtub, and in the absence of a screen, the water from the shower tends to splash all over the bathroom floor-which could be very inconvenient-the bathroom was slightly flooded one night when we were not careful enough with not splashing. The bathroom towels reeked of cheap soap which made one gag. The location is not the best as there is nothing of particular interest in the neighbourhood, except for rue de Mouffetard (a market street) which is a ho-hum to me.
The incident which really marred our stay occured on the morning after the first night of our stay. We were leaving for Belgium on Thursday and would return to the hotel on Sunday to stay for another 4 nights. The visibly pregnant receptionist was chirpy enough as we paid our bill, but when I requested to leave our 2 backpacks at the hotel until we returned on Sunday, the receptionist became very agitated and started saying in a very hostile and emphatic manner (seems to be shouting to me) that IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE as she had a small luggage room and she only keeps guests' luggage for only 6 hours and the long weekend was coming with many hotel guests, etc etc and kept repeating IT IS IMPOSSIBLE, etc etc. I was very shocked and taken aback by her hostile and agitated manner as I felt it was a reasonable and standard request and also because I would not expect a service staff to behave in such an ugly manner towards guests. I don't expect hotel service staff to be servile, but CIVIL at least. Moreover there were quite a number of guests standing around the lobby waiting to be attended who were witnessing her outburst. I told her emphatically and calmly that storing luggage was something that a hotel normally does and I was very unhappy about this. After some repeated shouting, she finally backed down and led us to the luggage room in an unwilling manner, pointed at a high ledge at our eye level and said in a hostile manner "you put your bag heeerreee!!!". We had to haul our heavy backpacks up to the ledge.
Well, as you can guess, this incident really spoiled my morning as it was extremely unpleasant to be shouted at in the morning while I was on holiday. I strongly feel that storing luggage is a basic service provided by hotels. If the hotel lacks space, they should make an effort to find more space to accomodate their guests, even to the extent of cluttering up their reception area for a short duration with bags. Moreover, we were returning guests coming back to give them 4 more nights of business, you could hardly expect us to haul our bags to the nearest train station to store them in lockers, then haul them back to the hotel on Sunday. I understand the hotel has a policy, but it is extremely inflexible and her attitude (and she represents the hotel) left much to be desired.
When we returned, she acted as though nothing had happened-perhaps this is the french way, not to acknowledge your mistakes, but in Anglo-Saxon culture, I believe acknowledging and apologising for lapses is important. It is no hotel du charme for me after this-I say dispense with the Godiva chocolates and give me good basic service like storing luggage and acting civilly.
When we last stayed in 2005, there was a well-dressed madame (her photo is all over the hotel so I resume she is the owner) whom we saw at the lobby regularly and she would greet us in a charming and indulgent way. I didn't see her at all during this visit, instead, we encounter 4 different counter staff over 2 days at the hotel, civil enough (except for the visibly pregant receptionist) but seemingly disengaged.
I would not recommend this hotel to my friends and family because this hotel does not provide minimum adequate service in my view and because the hotel does not have the best location.
