“Lovely Hotel and Staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2012

We spent three nights here in December, with our two adult children. We had two rooms that were across the hall from each other and in their own separate "wing" of the hotel, so we had a very private space. (I believe they were Rooms 1 and 2). The rooms were large, the beds were comfortable, and the bathrooms were both spacious and equipped with many amenities -- robes, slippers, hair dryer, and a heated towel rack, which also worked well to dry a few small items of clothing. The rooms faced out onto the courtyard/garden, and even in the winter, there was plenty of greenery. The staff was extremely friendly, with the hostess going out of her way to make phone calls to see if any restaurants were open on Christmas night.

The only possible drawback for some travelers might be the location. The hotel is located up the main hill to the Citadel, so travelers who were walking (as we were) have a bit of a hike if they're carrying much luggage. It's also a 10-15 minute walk to the main downtown areas. However, none of that bothered us. The hotel is close to several bus stops, to access the train station and other areas of town. We would choose this hotel again if we were to return to Besancon.

“Charming property, friendly service”

We stayed for one night in this hotel on our way to provence in December. The hotel is beautiful, with large elegant rooms, gorgeous garden (even in December; I can only imagine how beautiful it is in spring or summer), comfortable beds. It was a perfect stay. The service was extra-friendly -- we were helped with parking, reserving a table at a restaurant, etc. The breakfast was delicious and served in a very charming room.

We travelled with my wife's mum (and a baby), and we were provided with two rooms with a separate entrance connected by a small hallway. This was very convenient!

I would also like to take a chance to say sorry -- in case the owner reads the reviews -- in a hurry, when leaving, we forgot to return the keys and mailed them back only on the next day. I hope it did not cause too much trouble.

“Elegant and Charming”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 October 2011

What a delightful boutique B & B. The staff went out her way to help us with our too heavy luggage. Such a delightful room with a garden entrance. The room itself was pretty and peaceful. Our hostess accomodated our requests for wine, we had not brought any with us. Breakfast was in a truly elegant room, felt like we were in a chateau. The tower clock of the church right behind the building chimed sweetly, did not interup sleep. Only problem, and a caution if your are driving, figure out how to get there as their are many one way streets.

“Grace, style and charm”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 October 2011

The Hotel Charles Quint sits high up in the city opposite the cathedral, the roof of which was the view from our room. It lies on a quiet street and has a surprisingly spacious garden complete with swimming pool. The bedrooms are decorated with great taste and style best described as shabby chic but as only the french coulld execute it. The breakfast room was entirely original to the 18th century building and was a joy eat in. The breakfast was one of the best I have been served in a french hotel. The lady who attended to us on arrival and at breakfast could not have been more helpful and more charming and although she did so entirely in french she was patient and understanding with our fumbling replies. Parking in the limited space available in the street outside was interesting but well worth any effort.

“Not always an oasis...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 September 2011

This hotel is by no means an oasis of tranquility if you have the misfortune to have an outside-facing room, No 4 for us, or No 3 next door. Avoid them unless you are hard of hearing or can sleep through anything. The windows are just above the head level of pedestrians outside in the narrow street which is bounded by stone walls that reflect noise. We were entertained until 1am by a selection of drunken revellers bellowing at each other down the street, then the astronomical clock opposite that chimed loudly every 15 minutes through the night, until early morning traffic started coming past. Exuberant youngsters going to the school next door rounded off the worst night's sleep in memory. Closing the window gave a small improvement, but was not pleasant on a warm humid night. The second night was slightly better because we knew what to expect, but if we had booked a third we would have moved out.
I will give this hotel an average rating because the couple running it were charming (although they couldn't move us when we asked) and it is tastefully presented. I am sure I would have repeated other reviews if we had had an inside room overlooking the courtyard.
Other observations: parking is a nightmare and breakfast is astonishingly expensive for what is presented. We paid €48 for what was no more than 2 plates of bread and jam, orange juice and four fruit salads. The hotel is well-positioned for exploring Besançon.

Room Tip: Insist on a room facing inwards to the courtyard for peace and quiet.
