“We should have looked elsewhere”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 December 2011

We stayed one night on a drive back to Scotland from Italy. The hotel is well located, within walking distance of the centre of Reims with secure car parking, for which we paid 11 euros. However the public areas and our room were quite shabby, paint off the doors, dirty grout in the bathroom, marks on the sheets. The hotel was practically empty, just as well as there seemed to be little sound insulation and we could hear people chatting in the corridors. We paid the full price of 85 euros for our cramped, scruffy room, arriving in town around 10 am we were a little desperate. On the plus side the kitchen staff did produce a plate of sandwiches for us as the restaurant was closed, we had to transport them to our room ourselves, and the breakfast was acceptable. I wouldn't stay again.

“Nothing wrong for the price - would stay again. Free wifi, great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 November 2011

I stayed here in 2006 and was reluctant to return having read other reviews. In the end we decided that as Reims has only a small selection of hotels, it was better to stay here and pay less for something basic than pay 2 or 3 times as much and be disappointed. The money could go on champagne!

I have to say that I found no reason to complain. Yes the room was tired, the door lock a bit temperamental, the bathroom needed a scrub. But the bedding and towels were clean, the room was obviously vacuumed and cleaned during our stay. The bed was a double as is (unfortunately) normal for express hotels but was supportive enough, if you choose this chain of hotel you are paying for a smaller basic room than other hotels.

I didnt have any cause to speak to the staff other than check in and out so I cannot comment but the ones at breakfast seemed friendly enough. Breakfast was basic continental but included in the low price it was all that you need a small selection but lovely bread and pastries, some cereals, juices, hot beverages etc.

Free wi-fi was unexpected and very useful.

The location is great, close to the cathedral and Reims centre is quite small anyway.

Parking: The car park opposite (under the flyover) is free on weekends so that was a bonus.

If you want somewhere to lay your head and not spend time in the room or in the hotel reception then there is nothing wrong with this hotel and it is a good price.

“Probably the worst hotel I have ever stayed in.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 November 2011

I agree some of the reviews I am reading here now ... the location vis-a-vis the cathedral is very good, but that is where anything good about this place ends … well, the gal at the desk was nice and she did give us a glass of ice.
This was a situation of – it was late at night and we needed a place to spend the night … but I now think the car may have been a better option. The hotel was in an iffy location – as far as gangs of young men across the street hanging out in the parking lot. The hotel was dark – in the lobby & the room - and dirty. The lobby was very small. The bathroom was the worst. The room was extremely hot – even in October – there was no A/C – only a fan – with nowhere to plug it in! Opening the windows was only option until we went to sleep – because the raised freeway that went right in front of our window. Even when we did have the windows open – we had to close the drapes because of the raised sideway – that like the roadway – went right in front of our window … so no privacy! The continental breakfast was OK, but the smallest with the least variety of any of our 3 week travel from France to Austria and back. We felt forced to pay for the gated parking lot – because of the dark street and the gangs hanging out across from the hotel. To sum it up … only stay here if you are desperate!

Room Tip: Skip this hotel - if you want a good room!

“A real dissapointment”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 November 2011

I have stayed in many budget hotels but the Holiday Inn Express Reims has to be one of the worst. Location was perfect, just a short walk to the Cathedral and into the main shopping areas, easy to some of the Champagne houses.
On check in we were told that the hotel brassiere/restaurant was closed for the duration of our stay (2 nights) so we would only be able to get breakfast. This was fine for us but should have been made clear at some point prior to us arriving. Apparently it was due to holiday!
We booked a triple room but the room we got was really small and in all honesty twin beds would have been tight. Three single beds wedged next to each other and you had to walk single file along the ends of the beds, no room to pass or do anything else in the room. I tried to take a photo but couldn’t get far enough away to get the beds in. I did go and ask if we could be moved to a bigger room, but they said this was a family room! they were fully booked and were not that interested at all. On the plus side the bed linen was clean and modern; however the extra bed had two very old tatty pillows, a sheet and a blue blanket that had seen better days!
Bathroom, small and compact but needed a good scrub. The tiles and grouting behind the shower were really dirty and the surface around the sink had a real build-up of lime scale and dirt that a scrubbing brush would have easily got off. The toilet needed a good scrub too!! On a plus point the towels were clean, fluffy and a decent size.

“Just OK”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 October 2011

This overnight was okay, but we wouldn't stay there again. This was a one night, last minute stay. Public areas of the hotel were crowded. The lobby is small and cramped. The room was good size and had good desk service and hanging space, but he bathroom was horrendous.portable fan There was lots of mold and mildew in the shower and water temp was inconsistent at best. No AC, but had portable fan in the room (neither was needed, our Sept. stay was cool) The breakfast was basic continental with cereal, but a very small breakfast room and it was jammed. Parking was full when we arrived at 6:00, so needed to park at nearby parking lot (fortunately it was a weekend night, so parking was free. Multi-block walk to any restaurant other than the hotel. Price was a bit high for the location and cleanliness.
