“No frills, but convenient location and fair value”

We stayed 2 nights at the Kyriad Epernay, with a last minute booking. The price, location (an easy walk past the major Champagne Houses to the town centre), and availability of off-street parking were the main reasons for selecting this hotel.
The room met our expectations in terms of facilities, cleanliness, and space. It represented good value for the price. The staff both at reception and in the restaurant were very helpful.
We ate in the restaurant (buffet breakfasts and dinner) and found the food more than satisfactory.
Free wireless WiFi is available.

“Good location, needs updating”

Last minute booking direct, and it provided basic accomodation within easy walk of the town centre, where I strongly suggest you eat and visit.

As other have said the rooms are basic and need updating although the hotel staff were ok and the car park so so, it's a cheaper and better located that the campanile, but not as good. Average for a one night stop over, we saw a B&B for the same price in the town which I think we'll try next time!

“Kyriad was Great”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 June 2008

The Kyriad is just up the road from the Mercier Champagne House, so is ideally situated if you have been on one of the tours and sampled a few of the bubblies on offer. It is in the economical category and therefore not particularly luxurious, The room was clean and functional, with the rare provision of coffee/tea making facilities; parking was in the hotel carpark - but it was the food which we were most pleasantly surprised with.
A limited choice, but who cares when it is good - we both had different things and were both pleased with the result - eg great terrine from the buffet, salmon, ripe cheeses, dessert, excellent coffee - the sort of food we had been waiting for in France.
Breakfast was just as good - muesli, fresh fruit, yoghurt etc - at last something a bit better than the standard croissant and jam.
We would happily stay there again.

  • Liked — Food - dinner and breakfast
  • Disliked — small room - but this is usual

“Highly recommend you Do Noy stay here!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 December 2007

Having spent two weeks touring Europe in December we stayed in several Kyriad hotels and all were excellent, APART FROM the one in Epernay! We had booked ahead, asking one of the other Kyriads we had stayed in to make the booking for us, that is how confident we were about using these hotels.

On arriving at the Kyriad in Epernay we were impressed as it was in the Avenue du Champagne, very central for the town and champagne caves. The hotel looked very festive from the outside. It also had its own car park.

We booked two rooms and these were disabled rooms, (which we did not need). For a disabled person there were handrails etc and a wide door into the bathroom, ideal if you need these.

The room was small, the tv was tiny and only had about 8 channels. The bed was so uncomfortable and very low, it felt as though the mattress was sagging onto the floor.

Paintwork was chipped and the whole room looked as though it could do with a complete refit. There was no wardrobe, only a hanging rail with a shelf above, and no safe. Even the complimentary tea and coffee sachets looked as though they had been there for months.

However, we were only there one night so it would have to do.

We decided to eat in the restaurant at the hotel. BIG MISTAKE!!!!
I knew as soon as we went in there that we were not wanted! The woman (probably the manager as she had been on reception) said we could take a seat and then promptly took herself off to the other end of the restaurant to chat with another diner, leaving us waiting for menus.

A male member of staff entered, ackowledged us, then he went over to chat to another diner, ignoring us.

After 15 minutes of being ignored I called over the waitress. She then spoke to the manageress, looking in our direction, before handing us the menus.

If we had not been so tired after a long day travelling, we would have left before this time, but as we had eaten in other Kyriads and everything had been fine we wanted to eat there too.

Our meals arrived and out of the three of us, none of the meals was good. Mine was the worst however. Salmon and vegetables in a sauce, served in a deep pot. It looked very nice and the chunks of salmon on top were fine. However, as I delved deeper into the pot I found half thawed cauliflower and carrots floating in a watery sauce, together with half cooked pieces of salmon, the whole lot was stone cold! I sent the meal back and was given turkey slices as a replacement, edible but of such a low standard that even the worst cook in England could have produced better!

Through the night I started vomiting and by 6 am I was really ill, with the "runs" and a blinding headache. I can only put this down to food poisoning from the half cooked, frozen salmon. As we were due to leave France that morning our journey had to be delayed until I was well enough to set off and I had to stay in the room until check out at midday, resulting in us missing our booked channel crossing.

I shall be writing to Kyriad Customer Service to tell them that I think this must be the worst hotel in their group and badly lets down their name.

It is a real shame as Epernay is a very interesting town and Kyriad hotels are economical to stay in. If others in their chain can produce good service and accommodation, why can't this one? I felt that either the staff had some grievances with each other or they disliked English people. Either way, this is one Kyriad hotel we will not be staying in again!

“Terrible Hotel”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 September 2007

Stayed at this hotel twice during Sept 07. It was an overnight coach stay travelling to & from Italy with WA Shearings.

Have to comment that it is probably one of the worst hotels that I have encountered & would certainly never stay there again.

One the way out the room allocated was the size of a dog kennel & was very dirty, in fact, there was not enough room to swing a cat around let alone a dog! The carpet was covered in huge suspect stains (dread to imagine what caused them) & the curtains fell limpley hanging off of the broken runners. The double bed just about fitted in, with little room to spare & if you got out of it the wrong side, you hit your head on a TV, percariously perched upon a tele-twist, situated at shoulder level partially hanging over the bed. The bed itself had seen better days & the mattress was so old, it had the outline of two bodies impressed in it. Can't bring myself to comment on the bath, except to say it lacked enamel & had many dubious black patches & stains on it. Suffice to say that I stayed cleaner by not using it. The toilet smelled & was encrusted with brown....!

On the way back things improved - not. Although the room allocated was slightly bigger, the bed / bathroom / toilet remained consistantly poor, once again lacking even basic hygene.... Can't comment on the food, as I refused to even enter the restaurant.

WA Shearings & the hotel should be ashamed.
