Having spent two weeks touring Europe in December we stayed in several Kyriad hotels and all were excellent, APART FROM the one in Epernay! We had booked ahead, asking one of the other Kyriads we had stayed in to make the booking for us, that is how confident we were about using these hotels.
On arriving at the Kyriad in Epernay we were impressed as it was in the Avenue du Champagne, very central for the town and champagne caves. The hotel looked very festive from the outside. It also had its own car park.
We booked two rooms and these were disabled rooms, (which we did not need). For a disabled person there were handrails etc and a wide door into the bathroom, ideal if you need these.
The room was small, the tv was tiny and only had about 8 channels. The bed was so uncomfortable and very low, it felt as though the mattress was sagging onto the floor.
Paintwork was chipped and the whole room looked as though it could do with a complete refit. There was no wardrobe, only a hanging rail with a shelf above, and no safe. Even the complimentary tea and coffee sachets looked as though they had been there for months.
However, we were only there one night so it would have to do.
We decided to eat in the restaurant at the hotel. BIG MISTAKE!!!!
I knew as soon as we went in there that we were not wanted! The woman (probably the manager as she had been on reception) said we could take a seat and then promptly took herself off to the other end of the restaurant to chat with another diner, leaving us waiting for menus.
A male member of staff entered, ackowledged us, then he went over to chat to another diner, ignoring us.
After 15 minutes of being ignored I called over the waitress. She then spoke to the manageress, looking in our direction, before handing us the menus.
If we had not been so tired after a long day travelling, we would have left before this time, but as we had eaten in other Kyriads and everything had been fine we wanted to eat there too.
Our meals arrived and out of the three of us, none of the meals was good. Mine was the worst however. Salmon and vegetables in a sauce, served in a deep pot. It looked very nice and the chunks of salmon on top were fine. However, as I delved deeper into the pot I found half thawed cauliflower and carrots floating in a watery sauce, together with half cooked pieces of salmon, the whole lot was stone cold! I sent the meal back and was given turkey slices as a replacement, edible but of such a low standard that even the worst cook in England could have produced better!
Through the night I started vomiting and by 6 am I was really ill, with the "runs" and a blinding headache. I can only put this down to food poisoning from the half cooked, frozen salmon. As we were due to leave France that morning our journey had to be delayed until I was well enough to set off and I had to stay in the room until check out at midday, resulting in us missing our booked channel crossing.
I shall be writing to Kyriad Customer Service to tell them that I think this must be the worst hotel in their group and badly lets down their name.
It is a real shame as Epernay is a very interesting town and Kyriad hotels are economical to stay in. If others in their chain can produce good service and accommodation, why can't this one? I felt that either the staff had some grievances with each other or they disliked English people. Either way, this is one Kyriad hotel we will not be staying in again!
