I was quite delighted with L'Adresse: I just wanted it to be somewhere else! Place Plumereau and the surrounding streets have bars and discotheques hopping until all hours. If that's your scene then you'll love staying in this area. It wasn't mine. I'm a sound sleeper, but even at that, the constant bottle-smashing was a little much. And the singing! I see other reviewers have also noticed this. I've seen crowds of drunken people in plenty of cities, but never so much singing. One of the mysteries of the world is why people are always drunkenly singing at the top of their lungs in Tours. Though I'm glad they're so happy. ;)
As a woman travelling alone, it was not even the noise of the area that concerned me most, but that sort of anarchic energy that gets generated when lots of rowdy 18-35 year old men go out drinking together. I had intended to walk to the train station at about 5:45 a.m., but people were STILL singing and bottle-smashing. I stayed in my room until 6:25 due to safety concerns--by that time there were at least some street sweepers out and about who might come to my defence if I got into trouble with the roving drunkard crowd. If I went to Tours again I'd try the cathedral district in the hopes it might be quieter, and might feel safer to me.
That said, the moment you walk through the door of L'Adresse you'll heave a sigh of contentment. Even the colour scheme is quiet. The hostess spoke impeccable, if slightly formal, English. I try to speak French wherever I go, but she was so proficient in English that I stopped forcing myself. The room was extremely small, certainly, but I loved it--I thought the clever layout seemed almost Scandinavian the way it used all available space. The bed was the most comfortable one I slept in while in France. The Internet connected with no trouble, though it was quite slow--overusing their bandwidth, maybe? There are phones in the rooms, but if you want to use them for outside calls, learn from my mistake and remember to ask to have your line turned on before the reception closes at 11:00 p.m. Overall, this place was incredible value for money. I would stay here again if I were not travelling by myself. And I'd bring earplugs.
Room Tip: The higher up, the less noise, I'd think.
