“Mediocre--not bad--not great”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 July 2009

I traveled as part (leader) of a student & adult group. I went to the University in Tours, so I was familiar with this town. This hotel is relatively new--it was not there as late as 1984. From the outside, it looks wonderful. The Turone is walking distance to the Place Jean-Jaurès, where the post office and town hall are located--maybe 10 minute walk or so. To walk to Place Plumereau (the old area) would probably take at least 1/2 hour to 45 minutes.
The hotel is pretty modern. The lobby is modern--no quaint French-ness there. The rooms are VERY ordinary and unremarkable. My room was Room 120--I had a view of the interior parking lot from my window. The room was very clean, the bed was comfortable and the bathroom was clean with plenty of hot water & water pressure. The walls had almost NO decoration on them! I found this to be unusual.
Our group had breakfast included. It was sufficient for us--there were the usual breads, jams, yogurts and cereals. In addition, there was also cooked ham and scrambled eggs. My students and family liked it very much.
The town of Tours is VERY dead after about 7:00pm. The hotel lobby door did lock at 11:00pm forcing us to ring a bell to be let in. Since there is really not much to do in Tours at such an hour (except maybe walk to a café or mini-market), this early lockdown time is understandable.
The hotel is perfectly located for visits to the châteaux--Chenonceau was about 1/2 hour away by car.
If I were staying in the Loire Valley again--without a group--I would not stay there. It was fine for our group of 26. Individually, I would look toward the older area (Vieux Tours--Place Plumereau), or the boutique hotels off rue Nationale. There used to be one on rue Gambetta that my family stayed in and enjoyed--it was the Hotel Gambetta--this may have changed since 1984. Check it out--this was not an option for our large group.

Also NOTE: The address listed above as Place Thiers is correct, but the name of the Place is now "Place de la Liberté"--some maps may not reflect this recent change.

“Unpleasant”

We encountered surly and unhelpful staff at this hotel and we would not recommend it. The breakfast was a total shambles and disorganised.
The restaurant does serve good food at dinner if you can get a table but we waited an hour from entering the restaurant to receiving our food.

“Comfortable base for exploring the Loire Valley”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 July 2007

Stayed here for 5 nights in June 07, as a base for exploring the Loire Valley by car. The hotel is to the south of the centre of Tours, and I would recommend approaching it by car from the south if possible - leave the A10 motorway at Junction 22 "Tours-sud" rather than Junction 21 which will take you through the centre of Tours - not a good idea!

There is an underground garage at the hotel for which they charge 10 Euros per night. We didn't use it as there is free parking on adjoining side streets and we did not have any problems finding a space each evening.

The hotel reception staff were pleasant and friendly, and spoke English to those guests who did not have any French. Many of the guests were large groups of people travelling by coach, and the reception area and lifts could be uncomfortably crowded when one or more of these groups was waiting to go off for the day.

Our room was large, spacious and clean, as was the bathroom, and there was very effective air-conditioning.

The breakfast buffet was fine, there was plenty to choose from. There is also a restaurant open in the evenings, although we did not eat at the hotel.

The hotel is a good 15 minute walk from the old town area of Tours, so it is a bit of a trek to go there for an evening meal. However, we found a good fish restaurant about 10 minutes away, straight up Ave Grammont - La Chope, on the left-hand side as you walk towards the old town.

I would recommend this hotel as a base for touring the Loire Valley, as Tours is within 30 miles of many of the main chateaux - Chenonceau, Azay-Le-Rideau and Villandry, for example.

“Take care of last minute cancellation by the hotel !!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 May 2006

We got married on May 2006 in Tours. We had booked 3 months in advance 2 rooms for some of our guests coming from abroad.

Two days before the wedding date, the hotel Turone called us to cancel our reservation telling us that there had been some flooding in the rooms.

We enquired about feasibility to allocate other rooms as the hotel has more than 100 rooms and we booked 3 months before the date, but they refused.

As in the past, we experienced similar last-minute cancellations by hotels that need rooms to accept booking for a group or individuals for a longer stay, we decided to check at the hotel if the flooding was real.

I called the manager of the hotel and told him that somebody would come to check the rooms. My mother presented herself at the reception desk shortly after and she was refused access to check the rooms by the manager. In addition, when I called the reception, another lady was not aware of any problem with flooding.

All this confirmed that the hotel has cancelled our booking to accomodate another booking and lied to us about the true reasons. This has created a considerable amount of stress to reallocate people to another hotel at the last minute.

Fortunately, our wedding ceremony went smoothly, not thanks to Hotel Turone!
