“Do not stay here”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 August 2011 via mobile

This hotel is a joke, not sure how it is three stars. Rooms are old and outdated and the foyer smells stale as soon as you enter. In the room there is a brochure which states you gracefully receive a free water in the fridge, we don't even have a fridge! The hairdryer has no power and will take an hour to dry your hair. There was also a nice long hair in my supposed clean towel. This hotel is at least 40 minutes walk to the center of town. Please do yourself a favour and stay somewhere else.

“dirty, horrible and loud hotel - absolutly disorganised”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 June 2011

Absolutly terrible. We changed our rooms twice and it won' t get better. In the end we changed our bedding on our on, just to have a clean bed.
The rooms were very tiny and poorly maintained for a 3-star-hotel. Neither the sink nor the bathtub drains worked well; the air conditioner left a stale smell in the room; the mini fridge was empty. The breakfast was a total shambles and disorganised - e.g no eggs, and no more bread, if you are too late (9:00 a.m).
It was very load especially, when you get a room on the front side of the hotel, because of the traffic and the enormous building site.
The train station is a good 20 minute walk from the hotel, and the edge of the old town at least another 10 minutes beyond that.
If we go back to Tours we definitely won't be staying at the Turone.

“Could and should do much better”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 May 2011

We have been staying at this hotel for years, from when it was called the Mercure: we choose it solely because it is located very near to French friends we visit. However, we have latterly become rather disenchanted. Without detailing numerous minor gripes, our concern is that the already fairly average standards seem to be slipping and corners are being cut. (As just one example among many, it is not acceptable to have only three white wines on the list of a three-star hotel restaurant, with the only dry wine unavailable. The café across the road could do much better).

The Turone has always appeared somewhat functional, seeming to cater in particular for commercial customers and for coach parties staying for short periods - if you wish to dine comfortably in the restaurant, you need to make sure you do not turn up when one of these coaches comes in. The over-stretched staff are generally very helpful, but this can not in itself make up for the declining standards that the hotel management are apparently now setting. There are many other hotels around of similar rating providing a far superior service, and we feel this hotel needs to look to its laurels if it is to retain customer loyalty. OK for a very short stay, but definitely not for an extended break or romantic weekend.

“Mediocre--not bad--not great”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 July 2009

I traveled as part (leader) of a student & adult group. I went to the University in Tours, so I was familiar with this town. This hotel is relatively new--it was not there as late as 1984. From the outside, it looks wonderful. The Turone is walking distance to the Place Jean-Jaurès, where the post office and town hall are located--maybe 10 minute walk or so. To walk to Place Plumereau (the old area) would probably take at least 1/2 hour to 45 minutes.
The hotel is pretty modern. The lobby is modern--no quaint French-ness there. The rooms are VERY ordinary and unremarkable. My room was Room 120--I had a view of the interior parking lot from my window. The room was very clean, the bed was comfortable and the bathroom was clean with plenty of hot water & water pressure. The walls had almost NO decoration on them! I found this to be unusual.
Our group had breakfast included. It was sufficient for us--there were the usual breads, jams, yogurts and cereals. In addition, there was also cooked ham and scrambled eggs. My students and family liked it very much.
The town of Tours is VERY dead after about 7:00pm. The hotel lobby door did lock at 11:00pm forcing us to ring a bell to be let in. Since there is really not much to do in Tours at such an hour (except maybe walk to a café or mini-market), this early lockdown time is understandable.
The hotel is perfectly located for visits to the châteaux--Chenonceau was about 1/2 hour away by car.
If I were staying in the Loire Valley again--without a group--I would not stay there. It was fine for our group of 26. Individually, I would look toward the older area (Vieux Tours--Place Plumereau), or the boutique hotels off rue Nationale. There used to be one on rue Gambetta that my family stayed in and enjoyed--it was the Hotel Gambetta--this may have changed since 1984. Check it out--this was not an option for our large group.

Also NOTE: The address listed above as Place Thiers is correct, but the name of the Place is now "Place de la Liberté"--some maps may not reflect this recent change.

“Unpleasant”

We encountered surly and unhelpful staff at this hotel and we would not recommend it. The breakfast was a total shambles and disorganised.
The restaurant does serve good food at dinner if you can get a table but we waited an hour from entering the restaurant to receiving our food.
