“A Dud”

We actually booked this place from the Office du Tourisme in Tours who did not tell us how to get there by bike. There was actually a pretty easy way using the bicycle path, but neither the Office nor the Chateau itself told us about it, which is pretty annoying. I actually called from the highway, to the Chateau and explained where we were (yes, in the middle of the highway!) and we were told to continue on the highway and take this other road (up a hill). However, when we left the next day, we took a very bikeable path (even if going upward), from the Chateau which joined the bike path!!!!!! Please explain this to me -- because, sorry, I dont understand it.

The Chateau itself and its grounds are attractive, don't get me wrong. But we had already stayed in 2 other Chateaux along the way and frankly this did not even come close in terms of value for money. The rooms were small, completely renovated, comfortable enough, but were undistinguished. No ambiance, and I believe if one is staying at a Chateau that is what one looks for. We were shown a bigger room, but it also had no ambiance, richly decorated though it was. This place was more in the way of a hotel than a Chateau, especially when comparing it to the others we stayed at, which had a really family ambiance, we felt we were staying at someone's personal home; in fact, in one of them the owners actually greet you. This had none of that. It was impersonal. All of which to say, it was nothing special and I wouldn't go back, I'd rather stay in town and have the choice to eat at the many good restaurants in Tours rather than be stuck in the rather pretentious and definitely overpriced dining room at the Chateau. It is way out and far from everything. A bust.

“Great countryside chateau”

Wonderful chateau in the heart of the Loire Valley. Nice rooms and spectacular food. Very quiet. We did the half board option and it is a bargain for the room, breakfast and dinner for 2 at $199. As another person mentioned, it is difficult to find because the street signs in Joue-les-Tours are virtually non-existent . Take advantage of the local maps that are on display in each local and figure out where to go from there. They are a lifesaver!

“Friendly tradition”

I was looking for a place to spend a relaxing family weekend. This place had been recommended by friends. If you are by car it is a convenient location for Tours and the Loire Valley. If you don't have a car it would be better to forget this address. The strong points of this place are a secluded relaxing location and especially the attitude of the staff who seem genuinely happy to be there and take pleasure in their work. They went out of their way to be helful. It is not cheap, but not excessive either. The same can be said for the restaurant, but the meals are delicious. The bedrooms are traditional and all different. Perhaps some could do with a bit of refurbishment by today's standards, but that's more cosmetic than a real complaint. If I want to nit pick and find something wrong perhaps housekeeping could be a little better - thick dust under the radiator, piles of cigarette butts in a plant pot outside, and occasional dog deposits in the garden.

  • Liked — Staff attitude and traditional style
  • Disliked — Housekeeping

“Lovely property, excellent dinner”

We stayed just one night at this chateau as we were on a self-guided bike trip. The chateau is very nice and on a good-sized estate with plenty of areas to walk and explore. We speak little French and had a bit of trouble communicating with the nice woman at the front desk, but nothing important was missed.
ROOM: Our room was clean and fine for us. It was not a large room, but had a lovely window looking out on to the property and nearby tennis courts. The bed was comfortable and approx queen sized. The bathroom appears to have been recently redone and was very clean. The smoke from the people smoking in the room next door made its through the walls into our room each time they lit up. I could have lived without that.
RESTAURANT: We had a fabulous 4 course dinner in the restaurant. The food, service and wine were excellent.

“Lovely, secluded and excellent value”

We took 2 very good friends, including one American lady who'd never been to France before, to the Loire in October 2004. It's always difficult putting together an itinerary including places you've never been, but we chose the Beaulieu because it looked idyllic. (Also some good reviews on Tripadvisor that seem since to have been removed). Having had a difficult drive down from Cherbourg, we arrived in the dark, and found the place with no trouble despite dire warnings about misleading directions. The chateau was charming, our rooms were huge and beautifully appointed and the evening meal, which we'd booked before leaving the UK, was superb. Of all the hotels we stayed in on the trip, this was far and away the best, offering excellent value and lovely surroundings. The morning we had to leave was misty, and we walked around the grounds admiring the ethereal quality of the place - very special. The service was good, especially from the (Scottish) prioprietress, and we would definitely go back next time we're in the Loire. Our American friend was deeply impressed, staying in a real chateau, and it was everything we could have wished for. The only negative was that the front door is reached by a long curving staircase - not easy if you're carrying heavy suitcases. Otherwise - perfect!
