Actually, we just walked up when we arrived in Chartres.
This was a cheap stop at the end of a 30-day road trip, before we turned in the car to go to Paris. We enjoyed Chartres as a daytrip in 2002, and knew it would be a good place to end the driving portion of our trip.
The hotel is in need of renovation...like the fantastic post office building across the street which looks fantastic. Meanwhile, what was probably cutting edge in 1962 is really run-down in 2006. The lighting is difficult to figure out -- switches seem to be coordinated to work singly or together, but you need to find this out by trial and error. The toilet has an "electronic flushing mechanism" which is kind of creepy. The bed was OK, but new mattresses would help. The decor is dreary. The BEST thing was the view.
The woman at the desk in the daytime was very helpful, the night-man was less so.
