We stayed here on our first and last nights of a cycling holiday with our two teenage sons. We booked through a tour operator and were allocated this hotel. We requested one twin and a double for both nights. The twin room on each night was fine in terms of space but the double on our first night was tiny. There was no room to swing a kitten, let alone a cat, and only one of us could move around at one time. We asked to move but they were full, so there was nothing else available. We were put in a much nicer and larger room on our last night but it was still not that big for two people. we could both stand up at once though.
This is classed as a two star hotel and does not pretend to be much more than it is. The beds are comfortable, there is a small cupboard area and some drawers in each room, but not suited to unpacking a weeks worth of clothes and staying the week. The ensuites are showers and wc and like you get on board ship/ posh cruise ferries. I was half expecting a vacuum flush on the wc! That said, it was perfectly functional with towels, toiletries and good lighting. Wash bags needed to be placed on the WC seat while at the basin. The rooms were clean and the beds were comfy with spare blankets and pillow.
Breakfast was a simple continental affair with croissants, bread, coffee, fruit juice, yoghurts and fruit. all served in the breakfast room. There is no on-site restaurant for other meals. There is plenty of tourist info in the lobby and free internet access on the PC in the lobby. The staff were very helpful and obliging, speak good english and were able to assist with a lost Nintendo DS charger.
They have their own private parking for guests in a locked garage just around the corner that is also used for bicycles. This hotel is very popular with people on bike tours of the Loire valley so be prepared for lycra shorts and helmets in the morning.
This is very much "a bed for the night" place rather than one to stop for long at. It is well placed for the centre of Amboise and all its sights. There is no Aircon so it can be hot in the summer and noisy with windows open, as it is in the town centre. Would I stay here again? Probably not. I would prefer to pay more and have more comfort and aircon.
