We drove into Amboise on the way back from a tour of the chateaux of the Loire, and tried this hotel on the off chance. Receptionist was welcoming, charming, and offered to show us available room - which was a lovely surprise, with two large windows leading to a terrace which overlooked the Loire, and from which you could see the turrets of the chateau.
Good en suite bath, nicely furnished. Perfect setting in lovely town.

We based ourselves here for 8 days to explore the Loire Valley area by bike and it was an excellent decision. Our room was spacious and the bed very comfortable. En-suite facilities were good. We were on the back of the hotel so no traffic noise, but some noise from guests returning to other hotels late on a couple of nights - and the bins get emptied at 5am on a Monday morning! No air conditioning, but the room was never too hot - we were on the shady side of the hotel all afternoon and there was a fan provided.
There is a garage around the back for a couple of cars for 2 Euros a day, but we left ours parked over the road all week with no problems. We kept our bikes in the garage, as did many other guests.
The location is excellent - we had a view of the castle ramparts - the other side overlooks the river. A 2 minute walk gets you to the main street where there are about a dozen options for eating & drinking.
The staff were helpful and spoke English.
We only had breakfast on one morning, but there was a good buffet selection of cold meat, cheeses, jam, cereals, fruit, bread, madelaines, croissant & a cob as well as Tea, coffee & fruit juice.
Overall a really relaxing place to base yourself for the Loire Valley.

I stayed at this hotel for three nights in June 2009. The lady at the front desk was very nice and spoke some English. This is a hotel where you are supposed to always leave your key at the front desk when you go out. The room was very sparse but clean. Room rate for a single person was 50 euros per night including tax. No air-conditioning or Wifi. There is a garage for bicycle storage.

Wife and I arrived late and without a prior booking. Staff made us very welcome and were very friendly and helpful. Room was clean and adequate for what we both required. Having said that, walls between toilet/bathroom and bedroom are not sound proof so no privacy if you get what I mean. Given night key and requested just to make sure the door was locked on our return. No night porter. Breakfast was in the main dining room which gives off the air of past times.
Overall I would recommend this hotel as good for a short stay or overnight stay. Its position is superb for visiting the Chateau and the town. Any comments about restaurants etc are not the hotels concern. Allowing for the main road outside, the traffic not that busy. Would definately stay there again.
Tip: Go across the bridge opposite the hotel and take in the view back to the hotel and the Chateau, how much closer can a hotel get?
