My wife and 2 small children stayed in a 2 queen bed quad room in September for one night to break the journey from Paris to the South. We got lucky and were able to park immediately in front of the hotel in a free spot on the street. Check in was efficient and were were provided with a password for the free wifi and given directions to the nearest small supermarket. The room was very recently refurbished was modern pleasent and faultlessly clean. It even managed to be half-stylish in a scandanavian minimalist sort of way. The beds were excellent, the water pressure was good (note - no bath, if you care about that sort of thing), I was not disturbed by any strange noises at night and I think rode noise would only bother people who were particularly sensitive to it. This may not be an overly characterful hotel but it has more character than most modern budget hotels and provided accommodation that was pushing well into the mid-range. It is only about 10 minutes to the busy centre, which we explored the morning of our departure day (leaving the car happily parked in front of the hotel). The walking tour of Dijon marked with gold owls on the pavement is excellent. The kids couldn't care less about the old buildings but they loved finding the owls.
We stayed in this hotel over the week-end. Convenient location within walking distance from the historical center of DIJON but the hotel is very average! It has been renovated and redecorated recently but the rooms are rather small and those overlooking the main street are quite noisy in spite of the double glazing. The building in itself is old-fashioned.
There is nothing fancy about Hotel Montchapet and it is a typical two-star hotel. The room is small, the amenities are minimal, and the breakfast is little more than a baguette with jam. It's within walking distance of the train station (about 15 minutes pulling luggage), but even closer to the old town tourist spots. The neighborhood was quiet and safe and filled with cars; we didn't see an open space regardless of the time of day. At check in one of the employees spoke virtually no English while the other was quite fluent and very helpful. At checkout the young woman was very nice but spoke very little English. The bed wasn't particularly comfortable but they did have a blow dryer (something I now know is extremely important). For the price it was a decent value.
I chose Hotel Monchapet based on the proximity between the train station and the town centre. Also, I learnt from other reviews that the whole town of Dijon was undergoing roadworks for a tramline, and noisy roadworks that began early. This hotel was a little off the main track in a quiet neighbourhood, so fit the bill. I paid 55 euros a night and consider it a decent price for what i got.
The room was not the largest, but the layout made it more space efficient. It resembles more like a hostel room- but due to recent renovations, everything seemed bright and clean, including the toilet, which even had a built in hairdryer. Free wifi worked well. I believe the duvet was made of down feathers, as it kept me real warm during the night.
The only 2 things that I need to mention is that the room walls are rather thin, and breakfast at 6 euros for a bread roll, croissant, coffee, small cup of juice and jam is not well priced. One could have gotten a better breakfast at the local boulangerie in town.
All in all, a good two star outfit.
