Arriving in Dijon we found the Phillipe le Bon quite easily not far off the Place de Wilson circle. We immediately parked in the St. Anne parking lot right next to the hotel, and were pleasantly surprised when we realized this public parking (underground 6 euro/day) was cheaper than the 'private' parking offered by the hotel (outside on a hot French day 8 euro/day). Check-in was interesting, the reception area smelled of rancid fish, which worried us as we'd booked lunch the next day in the restaurant, but the receptionist was perfectly nice, offering maps and guidance on where to walk first. She then walked us across the street to our 'Suite' which was up two flights of stairs (Room A1- shared an entryway w/ A2 and was quite loud everytime the family next door came and went; screaming kids, shopping bags, loud locks/keys). The room was fair, definitely not modern- I would, unlike some people who said it's stuck in the 70's, venture to say they are trapped in the 1980;s with their decor. The bathroom was happily renovated and while it was the newest part of the room, it was also the worst feature (Typical Euro shower gets water everywhere when showering-- water pressure so vigrous the nozzle fell off the wall multiple times). Needless to say, I'm glad we had 5 extra towels...The real star was the bed, and while not a true Queen bed (two twins pushed together), the comfort made up for this.
Location was top notch, maybe 5 minutes walking from the major squares in town, the wifi was fantastic! I downloaded a 2.2 hour, 1.2 gigabyte movie in 26 minutes on my iPhone- pretty good for FREE wifi...I've paid 26 euro in a business hotel for half that speed. Restaurant was fair (will review seperately) but I feel their rating in the Michelin guide is STRICTLY based on ambience and starters/desserts... for us their main fish/meat courses fell far from the mark (or standard set by other Bourgogne restaurants).
