“Nice little hotel in prime location”

Le Chambellan is a nice little hotel in a very good location offering rooms at a reasonable rate (we paid 51 Euros for a double room).

Pros:
* nice building, courtyard is nice in summer
* intimate atmosphere
* breakfast available
* right in the heart of Dijon
* decent sized, clean, warm room

Cons:
* breakfast not included in price
* could do with a bit of a reno
* no free parking (but there is plenty of pay-and-display parking available right across the street in front of the big cathedral)

“UGH - move on!”

We were looking for a hotel that was a budget option. This seemed great since it does have a good location. WRONG. The room we were given had mold in the bathroom, the shower head had fallen off the wall and was not fixed. The window was small and overlooked another room that had smokers right outside of it. When we complained that said that this was one of their best rooms. You can do better than this place in Dijon.

“good value, close to centre”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2010

The place is no frills, but for 33 euros a night total (without shower in room) for a double room, how can you really go wrong? Cheapest place in France pretty much, 16.50 euros each is even cheaper than a dire hostel dorm room. It's right near the old town centre, a lovely place. As far as the hotel goes, no frills is good way to describe it. But the room does have a tv with BBC world on it, and the bed was fine. Shared bathroom and shower okay, nothing special but fine. (as long as the water is hot and the toilet floor clean, as they all were, I'm not really bothered).

I fully agree with other reviewer, that the other hotel owned by this mob, "Le Jaquemart" did not respond despite repeated emails! So don't bother trying them. And yes the reception did not speak much English, but for around 16.5 euros a nite each, who cares? (also, to the other reviewer mentioned above, the price is 1.50 higher than advertised because of "hotel tax" they add on per night.)

“A pleasant surprise”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 June 2009

Hidden just off the beaten track but a very well kept and interesting hotel.

With rooms spread over three floors, I was on the top floor, with an interesting sloping roof fitted with a skylight. Mine was a standard double room with shared bathroom facilities on the same floor (both the shower room and toilet looked fairly new and were spotless), and was very clean and boasting seemingly new fittings. The quirky shape of the room and the hotel as a whole will probably appeal to British travellers.

The location is just a minute or two's further stroll from the centre of town, a little over a mile walk right through the heart of the shopping area from the main Gare de Dijon station that the TGV brings you into, and about half a mile in the opposite direction you'll find the city's smaller rail station, which I believe is called Pont Neuf, but I stand to be corrected.

The only drawback I can envisage was that there appeared to be nowhere particularly convenient to park locally, but if you were prepared to walk a few blocks, there was plenty of free street parking to be found, and the area seems fairly secure and free from the graffiti that blights a lot of larger French cities.

I was in the city to watch it's football team, Dijon FCO, take on Lens, in a game to decide the Ligue 2 title and commemorate the opening of the stadium's new north stand. With the club seeming to have plenty of ambition (the new stand heralded the start of a transformation that will take the stadium to a 20,000+ capacity), I imagine that many others will be visiting Dijon to watch a game like myself in due course, and this hotel fits the bill well in that it is only about 3/4 mile walk from there to the stadium through a fairly secure feeling part of town, the last leg towards the stadium being a pleasant walk alongside a large tree-lined park, in keeping with the largely rural feel of this very welcoming city,

“Location & Price, but that's it”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 June 2008

We wanted very much to like this hotel since it was the only affordable one that responded to our email inquiries (their sister hotel, Le Jaquemart, never did despite repeated attempts). But in the end we just can't recommend it.
We spent 3 nights in beautiful Dijon, and the location of Hotel Le Chambellan can't be beat for strolling to everything you might want to see or do.
But...
1) Front desk staff pretty much aloof (we have a little French at our disposal, but clearly not enough to communicate requests or complaints to these folks).
2) No 24/7 reception, which is okay but they give you a keycode # to let yourself in after 10:00 pm which, with a flukey doorknob, is an exercise in frustration.
3) the bathroom door in our super-tiny room did not close properly (at all, really), which again we figured "what the heck" for the price. But then when we found that the tiny and difficult to maneuver shower didn't drain properly (at all, really), we had to complain--which took a lot of time and effort. The problem seemed cured the next day, but was back the following.
4) The room price posted on the door of our room and on the wall in the lobby was 48 euros per night. When we went to pay the bill it was 50 euros per night. We paused a moment wondering whether to query/complain but quickly decided it wasn't worth it given our previous experiences.
Maybe there are nicer rooms, and maybe if you are fluent in French you will have better luck getting what you desire in the way of basic service, but other than offering a place to rest our heads, Le Chambellan had nothing to recommend itself.
We will definitely go back to Dijon, which is elegant, authentic and totally untouristy. But we will definitely not stay here.
