Monsieur and Madame Grillon are charming hosts, and they run an excellent hotel. Our room was spotlessly clean - and decorated in a novel but comfortable style. Breakfast at €9.50 extra is fair value, and served in a beautiful setting. The hotel is easy to reach from the Autoroute and the railway station, yet the vineyards of Burgundy are but a few minutes' drive away by car. Madame Grillon is patient if one is trying to speak French and fluent if she needs to speak English - she could not be more helpful, and she knows the locality very well so can advise on places to go. I agree the swimming pool water was cold, but on a blazing hot day it would be refreshing! Hôtel-Dieu (NOT a hotel!) is the medieval almshouse in the town and a "must-see" - stunningly beautiful. But almost as good is just a stroll through the streets of Beaune, day or night - its idiosyncrasies remind you of "Clochemerle" and "Allo-Allo", but it's actually just authentic small-town France. We'll be coming back both to Hotel Grillon and to Beaune.
