“Relaxing stay outside Beaune”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 October 2010

After a week in Paris, our 2 night stay at the Chateau was exactly what we needed to relax before we started our second week in Paris. Our room was in the annex and was quite large, especially after the small rooms of Paris. We had a terrace with a table and chairs that overlooked the pool. With the exception of the noise from the motorway, it was a very peaceful and relaxing place. The drive into Beaune took about 10 minutes. While we initially did not reserve the breakfast, we did end up eating it as we didn't want to take the drive into town in the morning just to eat. All in all it was a wonderful stay.

“Perfect”

We were so pleased with our stay at Chateau de Challanges, from the accommodations and lovely country setting to the wonderful personable service of the staff. This is a very upscale hotel with a cozy room/bar off the lobby (with fireplace) where you can relax with your friends and has charming, well manicured grounds. Our room was in the annex building and was extremely clean, quiet and private. We would definitely stay here again. The proximity to Beaune was excellent - just a few miles. Beaune must not be missed ... we had an excellent dinner at Le Part de Anges and enjoyed wandering through the town square surrounded by lovely shops and quaint eateries. Don't miss the tour of Hotel Dieu the charity hospital run by the nuns in 1443 for the poor and needy. So much to see in this area, including great wineries (Pommard, Marseault, etc.)

“Beautiful chateau on the outskirts of Beaune”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 October 2010

When I booked this stay, I was a little concerned that I would be too far outside of Beaune to enjoy the town. On the contrary, access into Beaune is very quick and easy, and parking around the town center is fairly easy to come by. This turned out to be the best of what I was looking for. A lovely, quiet place to stay within easy reach of town.

The chateau has it's own bar. The selection and prices were good. Enjoying a beverage while sitting out on the beautifully manicured grounds is a great way to spend an afternoon in Burgundy.

Additionally, the English speaking staff made booking restaurant and winery reservations a breeze.

Upon returning to Burgundy, I will look no further than Chateau de Challanges for my lodging.

“Bait and Switch - Confirm Rates & Breakfast BEFORE you check in!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 September 2010

We were very disappointed in our stay at the Chateau du Challanges. While the property was rustic and lovely, we felt we were victims of a bait and switch. We booked our reservations online for one rate that was to include breakfast. When we checked out they charged us a different rate than our confirmation and charged us an extra $113 for breakfast! Had we known beforehand we wouldn't have had the croissant and coffee every morning or at least known it was going to be a $35 croissant and coffee!

When we showed them the confirmation to the clerk they said it was OUR mistake and they had never heard of Yahoo Travel or Travelocity. However they did have our reservation and confirmation on file and would've charged us if we didn't show up - so they got the info from somewhere despite claiming never hearing of it.

Other issues included no working internet despite being advertised and a very slow draining shower where you are left standing in dirty water.

The whole experience left a bad taste in our mouth and spoiled any good memories we had of the place.

Book at your own risk!

“Disappointed. Poor service and small gloomy rooms”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 September 2010

I booked this hotel after reading the reviews on here. However, we were really disappointed. The room we were allocated was small, gloomy and uninspiring. Bed cover was dirty. Small window. Hardly any light coming in. The bed was tiny for two average sized people. Woke with a stiff back! The Internet did not work in the rooms either. Had to go down to reception. The standard rooms are up 2 flights of narrow stairs. No lift. The lowest point was when we arrived, saw our room, and asked to be moved. I admit, the hotel was fully booked, which made it difficult, but the receptionist was distinctly snooty, and said that she could only move us if we paid another 100 Euros per night! We only wanted to see what the other standard rooms were like, and if they were any better, not upgrade. A very unpleasant conversation them developed, which spoiled the whole stay! The location is lovely, but you need to drive everywhere. And as this is in the middle of wine country, this is not ideal if you want to enjoy the local wines. Standard rooms are very disappointing. The suites are probably very nice, but for nearly 200 Euros per night, you could probably book a great 5 star hotel elsewhere. A shame.
