We were seeking an authentic French hotel experience and this is what we got at Le Seignelay. The building, like most in Auxerre, is several centuries old. We arrived by train and reached the hotel by about a 1km walk, perhaps 15 minutes, but not hard to find.
Our room was upstairs overlooking the courtyard, and we found it quite reasonable for the price we paid (52 Euros per night). The only small problem was the shower which did not drain very well. We mentioned this to one of the proprietors who replied that that's what you get from French plumbing, so we figured that if he was not too concerned then neither would we be.
We found the staff friendly and helpful with directions despite our limited French and their limited English.
On our first night we dined at the restaurant and loved it as it was all we had anticipated from a regional restaurant - local produce and knowledgeable staff. The wine list was interesting and well-priced.
As we overlooked the courtyard where the restaurant was, we feared that it might be noisy and disturb our sleep, but as we were able to close the outer wooden shutters, this was not the case. There was the added advantage that it stopped the mornig sun coming straight in.
Although the reataurant was not open for lunch, we were able to obtain drinks in the afternoon after a day exploring this most interesting town.
