“Resting on their laurels?”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 October 2009

This is a Hotel Logis
Location good. Garage is around the corner in a lock-up but easily accessible.
Our friends had room 3 in the main building. Quite nice, up in the eaves, apart from the
cooking smells from the restaurant below.
We had 22 across the way and it was like student digs. We had a bed (comfortable)
bed side shelves, table and chair and a bench for the suitcase. We didn't expect the Ritz but it was very bare. The bathroom was old but clean.
Some of the other rooms seemed quite nice, so maybe they are in the business of refurbishing.
Breakfast is dreadful, although coffee is brought by a very cheery man.
I know the French are not big on breakfast, but the OJ is so weak it has obviously been heavily diluted. We even had a stale croissant one morning. Unforgivable in France!
All served in a depressing room feeling like a cafeteria. For €7, don't bother. Eat out.
We didn't try the restaurant. After the stale croissant, thought we'd give it a miss!

“Our favorite French hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 July 2008

We were seeking an authentic French hotel experience and this is what we got at Le Seignelay. The building, like most in Auxerre, is several centuries old. We arrived by train and reached the hotel by about a 1km walk, perhaps 15 minutes, but not hard to find.
Our room was upstairs overlooking the courtyard, and we found it quite reasonable for the price we paid (52 Euros per night). The only small problem was the shower which did not drain very well. We mentioned this to one of the proprietors who replied that that's what you get from French plumbing, so we figured that if he was not too concerned then neither would we be.
We found the staff friendly and helpful with directions despite our limited French and their limited English.
On our first night we dined at the restaurant and loved it as it was all we had anticipated from a regional restaurant - local produce and knowledgeable staff. The wine list was interesting and well-priced.
As we overlooked the courtyard where the restaurant was, we feared that it might be noisy and disturb our sleep, but as we were able to close the outer wooden shutters, this was not the case. There was the added advantage that it stopped the mornig sun coming straight in.
Although the reataurant was not open for lunch, we were able to obtain drinks in the afternoon after a day exploring this most interesting town.

“Not impressed”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 June 2008

We stayed in this hotel for one night. The family who owned it was friendly, giving us some tourist guides. I can't comment on the restaurant as we stayed on a Monday night when the restaurant is closed. Our room was upstairs (no lift) and parking was off-site in a secure garage nearby. While the hotel was inexpensive, I still had some issues with the quality of our stay. Our room was furnished with 1970's furniture, which is OK, but the walls were painted pink and brighter pink with lemon yellow; apt to cause nightmares. The shower was one of those plastic modular models; clean and functional but feels like it might fall apart at any moment. The hotel was clean, but generally old and a bit run down. The towels were threadbare and our sheets has holes in them. Our room faced the main street, which was an issue as the windows were old and did not provide much insulation from considerable traffic noise or the heat. There is no air conditioning, nor was a fan provided. We both had a fairly sleepless night due to outside noise and the heat. On balance, I couldn't recommend this hotel.

“Wonderful place”

A delightful, family run hotel in the center of old Auxerre. Good restaurant on site.
We were received and treated quite graciously in all respects, and the prices were very reasonable for booth lodging and a meal.
Would stay here again without any doubt.

“Personal hotel with good restaurant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 October 2006

This is personal two-star family-run hotel in the centre of Auxerre old town. It is quite easy to access by car, although the garage is located a block or two away. The staff is friendly and helpful with a lot of humour (at least in French). There is a nice courtyard with flowers. The hotel owners are very animal-friendly.

Our room was on the other side of the courtyard. Sound isolation could have been much better, but fortunately the other guests were normal, nice people. The room was spacious, the bathroom a bit old, but ok for the price.

The best of the hotel is perhaps its restaurant, which is excellent even by Burgundian standards.
