We arrived at dusk to find a gorgeous maison to rest our weary heads. Staying here was like spending the night at a rich uncle's well-appointed summer home. A quiet garden stroll through the grounds, the call of a night bird, the crunch of gravel beneath our feet. Entering the lobby, the staff cheerfully handed us our large, fringed room key to our suite overlooking the garden. We slept the sleep of royals and were greeted the next morning by an exquisite and inviting spread of all the accoutrements of a traditional French breakfast buffet that filled the bar, a side table and happily threatened to overwhelm our linened table. As Napoleon, Josephine and Georges Sand watched from their perch on the backlit bookcase, we happily replenished ourselves with a delightfully simple breakfast. Wanting to linger, eat a little of everything offered, we were lavish in marmalade, pain au chocolate and lait chaude... our french adventure had begun with a delicious initiation.
