I saw this hotel in a hotel directory whilst on a trip in France with two friends and I asked the receptionist where we were staying to help me by phoning to book three rooms in The Auberge de la Chaloire for the following night. Alarm bells should have rung when this apparently simple task took some minutes. The Auberge wanted to know in detail (via our receptionist) what time we would be arriving and whether we would be eating. I didn't know what time we would arrive and so said we wouldn't eat there. On arrival, we were disappointed as the Auberge fronts onto a quite busy road (their brochure says it is a very quiet road), the swimming pool (which we had particularly looked forward to using) turned out to be above ground, scarcely larger than a hot tub and unattractively sited very close to the rear wall of the hotel. The garden was small and the lawn unmown with children's toys scattered in the grass. Two chairs and two loungers with no cushions. The 'completely renovated' hotel had one small-ish public room downstairs which simultaneously served as reception, the bar, the lounge and the breakfast room. The rooms were small, without aircon so the windows had to be fully open, but faced onto the road. Newly done small en suite shower room though with a good shower. The upstairs corridor was badly lit and looked untouched since the 1970's. The unsmiling Dutch lady proprietor insisted we should eat there that night. I reminded her that we had already been asked at the time of booking and had said no. She continued to insist in a quite agressive manner. I said we had made arrangements elsewhere in order to escape from her. We went to the local town - Autun - which has a charming and atmospheric medieval centre with a selection of well priced restaurants. In the morning, I was woken by trucks passing on the 'quiet' road outside. Two of us had a perfectly satisfactory but basic breakfast served by the gentleman proprietor, but when the other member of our party went for a run before breakfast he came back to find the breakfast had been cleared away so he didn't get anything to eat. The brochure mentions that cooked items are available at breakfast - we were not offered any. On the way back to my room I encountered the lady proprietor and said 'Good Morning'. She blanked me and did not reply. On check out they charged us for the third breakfast. We didn't argue and just paid as we were keen to leave this establishment. In many years of travelling throughout Europe I have never encountered such an attitude from hotel owners. Maybe they were just having a bad couple of days. I suspect not.
